Every morning before classes at Etobicoke School of the Arts, even before teachers arrive for the day, Jane Forrest paints. The Grade 12 student has spent countless hours in her school’s art studio, driven by a creative passion, but also by her career goals. Forrest has been offered $4.1 million in total scholarships — a record for a student from the specialized public secondary school. Varey, a contemporary artist himself, conceived of Portfolio Day as a way for students to have meaningful conversations about themselves and their work with school representatives. Last week, a New Orleans high school student set a record after applying to 185 colleges and receiving $13.6 million in scholarship offers.
