Say goodbye to the Toronto rules that have preserved huge cuts of the map for single-family houses. The decision is an upheaval of Toronto’s long-standing “yellowbelt” — the roughly 70 per cent of Toronto’s zoned residential land that has been restricted to single-family homes only. Others rebutted that Toronto desperately needs more housing — lest people be forced to leave the city where they’ve grown up — and that multiplexes were a good option for multi-generational families. Targeted policies could include subsidies, or priority timelines for development approval, if a multiplex owner entered an agreement with the city to provide affordable housing, Case said. “It’s actually increasing the supply, the choice, the opportunity for housing,” Lintern said of the city’s goals, also noting the chance for multi-generational living.

- Nova Scotia’s government is providing some of its surplus land in an Annapolis Valley village to help defray the cost of building 24 co-operative housing units. Project consultant Earl Mielke says the province’s donation will make the project viable, adding that purchasing the land would have cost about $1 million. Premier Tim Houston has argued that the best way to reduce the widespread shortages of affordable housing is to take a wide approach to increasing the supply across all income levels. However, NDP Leader Claudia Chender has argued that the province needs to be moving more quickly to address housing shortages and resume building some public housing on its own. He said the priority is to “do a better job of looking after the public housing we have,” noting that the province plans to spend $50 million in the next four years to upgrade its public housing stock.

David Salvo says the Alliance for Securing Democracy has been mapping and cataloguing Russian and Chinese interference since 2000. Salvo was speaking to the procedure and House affairs committee, which is studying foreign interference in response to allegations that China tried to meddle in the last two federal elections. Chiu told the committee he did not experience foreign interference in either the 2015 or the 2019 elections but the most recent vote was different. Salvo says his group aims to show that the tools used by Beijing are not partisan or politically motivated, for the most part.
