On a bright, frosty afternoon recently, Alan Donaldson sat on the hard steps of Toronto’s Church of Saint Stephen-in-the-Fields, adjacent to a small, dense homeless camp, and talked about being bounced around. To find a warm place to lay his head, Donaldson often calls shelter systems beyond the city itself. The notice has led some in the camp to accuse the city of relocating people rather than fixing underlying issues. Shelters are housing more people than they were a year back, and the number of people turned away has risen continuously. Community organizer Rachelle Friesen believes the city could have better prepared for the shelter’s closure.

OTTAWA, ON and GATINEAU, QC, Dec. 7, 2022 /CNW/ - Today, the CRTC updated its commercial radio policy to better support Canadian artists and provide flexibility to help the radio industry remain competitive in a changing environment. To increase support for Indigenous content and voices within mainstream radio, the CRTC also expects commercial radio stations to include Indigenous music in their playlists and to report annually on the amount of Indigenous content aired. Some of the outcomes from that process may have an impact on commercial radio stations, as well as other sectors of the broadcasting industry. In 2020, the CRTC initiated a proceeding to assess the relevance and effectiveness of the rules currently governing commercial radio in Canada. Throughout the proceeding, the CRTC heard how commercial radio is valued by Canadians and how they support the promotion of Canadian artists.

Growing Energy Costs Driving Hyperscalers to Reimagine SustainabilityThe War in Ukraine and the subsequent impact on Europe’s energy security has led industries and consumers alike to radically adapt their behaviour. Take for example, the data centre industry. Europe, once viewed as a haven for major data centre companies, is home to a plethora of data centres belonging to hyper-scalers such as Microsoft and Amazon Web Services. While the data centre industry in Europe is pivoting due to energy shortages, similar changes may be coming to Canada, but for different reasons. Marginal food insecurity is set at the level where a family worries about running out of food and/or have limited food choices due to a lack of money. Moderate food insecurity is when there is a compromise in quality and/or quantity of food. Severe food insecurity results in missed meals, reduced food intake, and, at its most extreme, going day(s) without any food at all. In B.C., 3.2 per cent of the population experience severe food insecurity – roughly 171,000 people. That certainly explains the need for food banks and an Annual Food Bank Day on the CBC.
