Stars coach Pete DeBoer admitted that getting used to the late starts in the series is an acquired taste. “The late starts I’m still getting used to,” DeBoer said, “walking out of the rink at 2 a.m. for a 9 a.m. start. We typically see one a series.”Instead, three of the first four games in the Stars-Wild series are scheduled for an 8:35 p.m. Saturday. Carter v. Canada (2015) told Canadians that ending a patient’s life is lawful and warranted, in specific situations with proper safeguards. Given Canada’s single-payer approach to health care, MAiD seems to present an unavoidable conflict of interest for government. Dying with Dignity, the largest MAiD lobbyist group in Canada, promotes surveys that suggest 80 percent support for MAiD in Canada (Dying with Dignity Canada 2022). Will clinicians find a way to function as though, for the vast majority of care, MAiD does not exist? “In Canada, MAID has become a matter of ideology.” Globe and Mail, February 25.

Security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic will be a key focus in the upcoming Danish defence agreement, Denmark’s acting Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said on a visit to the Faroe Islands this week. “I want a close dialogue with the North Atlantic governments in particular in connection with the upcoming defence settlement. “Therefore, security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic is an important theme in the upcoming defence settlement. The Danish Ministry of Defence said the system will help the Norwegian Armed Forces’ surveillance of the North Atlantic. “The enormous extent of the Arctic and the North Atlantic makes close security cooperation with the Faroe Islands and Greenland necessary,” Poulsen said.

It involved the powers U.S. presidents have to declassify intelligence in situations that call for transparency — and whether such a process could unfold in Canada. Typically, officials can declassify information at the behest of a president, or, in rarer cases, presidents can directly release information themselves. The Treasury Board and the federal Justice Department are responsible for maintaining government security and deciding what information is released or redacted, Wark said. Complicating matters are a suite of outdated laws: the Access to Information Act, the Security of Information Act, and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service Act. “It’s going to raise other questions about why was this information released, why was other information not released,” Sayle said.

The contract extension, which covers about 3,000 American workers of GE, will also ensure labor protections after the spinoff of the company's aerospace and energy divisions, according to the International Union of Electric Workers - Communications Workers of America (IUE-CWA). GE is set to separate its aerospace and energy businesses in early 2024 to become GE Aerospace and GE Vernova, respectively. The contract extension will take effect on July 1 and continue through June 22, 2025. Separately, eight local unions that together cover about 400 employees also ratified contract extensions with the company, GE said on Tuesday.

Fox viewers. Fox viewers are unique in how little they channel surf. By not including an apology and/or retraction in its settlement, Dominion allowed Fox to escape a far more damaging penalty: telling the truth to viewers. The network is still facing a lawsuit from Smartmatic, another voting tech firm that is suing for $2.7 billion. And after the election, Fox was flat-earth central.

Iceland has authorized U.S. submarines to make service visits to the country, it said in a news release on Tuesday. Such visits have long been made in allied countries like Norway, and more recently the Faroe Islands, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said. The government described service visits as those required to receive supplies or to rotate crews. “These service visits will contribute to strengthening the continuous and active submarine surveillance of allied countries, which ensures better situational awareness and increases the safety of underwater infrastructure such as submarine cables in the waters around Iceland,” the ministry said. Iceland says allowing the submarine visits builds on increasing cooperation between Washington and Reykjavik on North Atlantic cooperation.

More than 155,000 federal public servants are on strike after the federal government and the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) failed to reach a deal before a Tuesday evening deadline. The announcement came after two bargaining groups representing a significant part of the government workforce entered a legal strike position last week. Of those workers, about 47,000 are considered essential and, although in a legal strike position, will continue to report to work. Strike votes for this group happened from Feb. 22 until April 11, while strike votes for the CRA group were held from Jan. 31 until April 6. PSAC leadership said Monday all workers in a legal strike position would strike Wednesday if the union didn't reach an agreement with the federal government by 9 p.m.

By Peter Menzies, April 19, 2023Sometimes the fog of war reveals as much as it hides. While the numbers themselves are accurate, the graphic presentation clearly misrepresents/understates the extent to which the CBC is dependent on government funding. Which raises the question: is the CBC embarrassed by its government funding? ”The CBC is The Globe’s largest competitor in the digital ad space among Canadian-based media. “You can’t have a level playing field when the public broadcaster…wants to be all things to all people,” he said.
