Twitter head Elon Musk on Tuesday attempted to reassure wary advertisers by hyping up the site's newly introduced content moderation policy against hateful material. Under the new policy, unveiled in a blog post titled "Freedom of Speech, Not Reach," Twitter will soon begin tagging posts whose visibility has been limited. Following the row, Canada's CBC/Radio-Canada and Swedish public radio Sveriges Radio (SR) also quit the social network. Story continuesAccording to analyst Jasmine Enberg at market research firm Insider Intelligence, Twitter's revenue is set to drop 28 percent this year, because "advertisers don't trust Musk." But for Musk, the ability to tinker with Twitter's protocol might be worth the financial risk of spooking advertisers.

Advertisment:Claim: In mid-April 2023, Twitter labeled Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's (CBC) official account "69% Government-funded Media." As of this writing on April 18, CBC's Twitter profile indeed included the label "69% Government-funded Media" above its bio reading, "The official CBC Twitter. The "government-funded media" label was attached after the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Pierre Poilievre, posted a message on social media asking for it. CBC's new "government-funded" designation also followed Twitter's move to label Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and National Public Media (NPR) "government-funded media," and those media outlets' subsequent decision to go silent on the platform. As far as we can determine, no other accounts labeled as government-funded media had a percentage attached to the label.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has been blasting CBC News as a “biased propaganda arm of the Liberal Party” as he campaigns to defund the public broadcaster. If anything, CBC is biased toward Canada’s establishment, which includes both the Liberals and Conservatives. While Poilievre has never cited any actual facts to back up his assertion that CBC is out to get Conservatives, there is hard evidence to show it’s not the case. The study found that the broadcaster covered the Conservatives more positively than Global News and CTV News. CBC’s role as a potential counterweight to corporate media is why it has always been so loathed by the right-wing.

Send this page to someone via emailThe CBC’s fight to see mandate letters for Ontario cabinet ministers goes to “the very core” of what freedom-of-information regimes are designed to foster, a lawyer for the public broadcaster told the country’s top court Tuesday. These elements are an informed public, accountable government and, ultimately, the democratic process, Justin Safayeni argued in the Supreme Court of Canada. Story continues below advertisementA seven-member panel of the Supreme Court reserved judgment in the case until a later date after hearing from the parties and several interveners. A divisional court dismissed the attorney general’s application for judicial review, and the Ontario Court of Appeal upheld the decision. That prompted Ontario to take its case to the Supreme Court.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Twitter profile has a new label that Elon Musk wrote specifically for Canada's public broadcaster: "69% Government-funded Media." "Canadian Broadcasting Corp said they're 'less than 70% government-funded,' so we corrected the label," Musk wrote in a tweet last night. The tweet included a screenshot of CBC's Twitter profile with the new "69% Government-funded Media" label. The "69% Government-funded" label, while obviously a joke, appears to be inaccurate. Another screenshot posted by Musk suggests that he briefly labeled the CBC as "70% Government-funded Media" before changing it to 69 percent.
