One of Canada’s largest national labour unions has threatened to strike following nationwide votes by more than 120,000 federal government workers, who are pushing for wage increases and the ability to work remotely, among other demands. It wasn’t immediately clear what percentage of members voted to strike. PSAC national president Chris Aylward said the workers are now in a legal strike position, meaning they could have walked out as early as today. Of the 155,000 workers, roughly 120,000 — or about one third of all federal public service workers — will be eligible to walk off the job, Aylward said. Those not eligible to strike include firefighters and Coast Guard workers, as well as those involved in national security and income distribution programs.
A year-long, cross-border firearms trafficking investigation has led to the arrests of 42 people and the seizure of 173 guns in Canada and the U.S, Toronto police said on Tuesday. Many of the guns were legally purchased in the U.S. states of Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, Ohio and Texas, police said. Others were from Barrie, Ont., Pickering, Ont., Whitby, Ont. The investigation was launched by the Toronto Police Services Gun and Gang Task Force in March 2022.
OTTAWA — The Opposition Conservatives are asking Twitter to apply a "government-funded" label on accounts associated with the CBC, even as other broadcasters decry the tag for not making clear their editorial independence. The social-media giant currently defines "government-funded" media as outlets that "may have varying degrees of government involvement over editorial content." Other media outlets have raised concerns about the difference between phrases such as "government-funded" and "publicly funded" and what each implies. With the British broadcaster continuing to find fault with that phrasing, Twitter made yet another change on Wednesday to call the BBC "publicly funded." CBC said it hasn't made a decision yet on whether it will continue to use Twitter if the company decides to label it as "government-funded," saying it cannot comment on hypotheticals.
Rendering shows plans to transform the existing collection of historic ships on the waterfront into a new Maritime Museum space located on an extended pier over the bay. While the historic ship collection is called the Maritime Museum of San Diego, there is no actual museum building, which people find confusing, Ashley said. Rendering of gallery space in proposed Maritime Museum space. So the purpose of this building is to create a proper context for all the historic vessels. The Maritime Museum first entered into a lease with the San Diego Unified Port District in 2004, although its origins date back to 1927 when the Star of India first came to San Diego.
Conservatives ask Twitter to label CBC accounts as ‘government-funded’ media Apr 12, 2023 | 8:53 AMOTTAWA — The Opposition Conservatives are asking Twitter to apply a “government-funded” label on accounts associated with the CBC, even as other public broadcasters decry the tag for not making clear their editorial independence. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre tweeted a copy of a letter addressed to the company making that request on Tuesday. The “government-funded” label appears above every tweet from accounts that are tagged with the description. Twitter added the descriptor to BBC and National Public Radio accounts last week after initially labelling them as “state-affiliated” — a term usually reserved for government-run propaganda outlets — and NRP announced this morning it is quitting the platform as a result.

Thule Air Base in Greenland, the U.S.’s northernmost military installation, has been renamed Pituffik Space Base. “For seventy years, Thule Air Force Base has maintained peace in the Arctic, it’s conducted scientific research, it’s been part of the community,” he said in a video address posted on Twitter. The frigid temperatures on the ground were no match for the warmth of the friendship shared today at the Pituffik Space Base renaming ceremony. The U.S. Space Force was established in 2019 and is organized under the Department of the Air Force. When it was created, the Department of Defense announced that Air Force installations would be reviewed, and like Thule Air Base was this month, be redesignated as Space Force bases.
The cynical response is, well, a very sarcastic “good luck with that.” Ontario Place is a provincial project. Yes, the odds are stacked against a mayor on a file like Ontario Place, but the odds will be stacked against the mayor on virtually anything they want to do to improve this city. But just like with the Ontario Place issue, the city has a good case to push for change based on data and evidence. Armed with data like that, the next mayor will need to be willing to loudly and relentlessly make the case for a new deal that embeds more permanent revenue into Toronto’s budget. But it’s worth remembering that Toronto city hall’s record when it comes to fighting isn’t half bad.
Forecasters are warning of swollen creeks and rivers as heavy rain sweeps over southern British Columbia. High streamflow advisories have been posted for all of Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and the Similkameen and Okanagan regions further east, warning that the possible rapid rise in rivers poses a risk to public safety. The River Forecast Centre says streams and rivers in the affected areas are expected to rise into Monday with possible localized flooding. The weather agency is now warning residents in southeastern B.C., from the Boundary region through the West and East Kootenay regions, to expect as much as 50 millimetres of rain before it eases on Tuesday. The river forecaster says the smaller, low-elevation creeks and rivers are the most at risk of flash flooding because of the remaining snowpack.
