OTTAWA - If Pierre Poilievre wants to “defund the CBC” while maintaining its French-language programming, he’ll have to overhaul the country’s broadcasting law in order to do it. Past Conservative leaders have also taken aim at the CBC, which receives its share of public money through Parliament when MPs vote on its federal budget. Poilievre’s pitch to strip the CBC of its public funding is widely popular among Conservatives and earned loud cheers from the crowds who packed rooms to see him during last year’s leadership campaign. In 2021-22, the CBC received more than $1.2 billion in government funding, a decrease from about $1.4 billion in 2020-21. It also draws a distinction between “government” and “public” funding because of the fact that the money it receives is granted through a vote made in Parliament.

In the event of a strike, some employees will be deemed essentialHundreds of federal public servants in the North could walk off the job as part of a Canada-wide labour disruption in the next 58 days. There are about 600 federal employees across Nunavut, N.W.T. and the Yukon who are now in a legal position to strike after the union representing them voted in favour of a strike mandate. The workers poised to strike come from four different bargaining units: program and administrative services (which is the largest bargaining unit in the core federal public service), operational services, technical services and education and library services. Rousseau said the public might feel the effects of a strike or a lockout the most at Services Canada, Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, and at RCMP detachments.

Past Conservative leaders have also taken aim at the Crown corporation, which receives its share of public money through Parliament when MPs vote on its federal budget. Poilievre's pitch to strip the CBC of its public funding is widely popular among Conservatives and earned loud cheers from the crowds who packed rooms to see him during last year's leadership campaign. "Almost everything the CBC does can be done in the marketplace these days because of technology," he told host Andrew Lawton. "I'm not sure politicians really want to go down the (road of) ... 'We are going to give francophones better service with public money than we're going to give anglophones,"' he said.

VANCOUVER - Canada’s federal health minister says he’s working with provinces to prevent the mass exportation of essential medications after thousands of doses of the diabetes and weight-loss drug Ozempic were shipped from British Columbia to the United States. Jean-Yves Duclos says the level of “abuse” was “outrageous” after a Texas-based doctor with a licence to practise in Nova Scotia wrote 17,000 prescriptions for the drug that were filled by two pharmacies in B.C. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia says it suspended the doctor’s licence on an interim basis after learning of the prescriptions. Duclos says legal ways to prevent medications being exported in mass quantities in future will be explored through the Food and Drugs Act. Dix says assistant deputy health ministers from both the federal and provincial governments have met to discuss preserving Ozempic supplies for Canadians and will be looking for permanent solutions.

Economic reconciliation is central to Canada’s efforts to reach carbon net zero — and in the energy sector, it makes good business sense. Many challenges presented themselves, including navigating our way out of the Indian Act and developing a land management regime under the First Nations Lands Management Act (FNLMA). First Nations must have an active leadership role and an equity stake in clean energy projects. An equity stake supports self-determination and provides a path to economic reconciliation. Wayne McQuabbie is the chief of Henvey Inlet First Nation; Gregory Newton and John Beaucage serve as CEO and vice president, respectively, of Nigig Power Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Henvey Inlet First Nation.

Despite its stated intention, Elon Musk’s Twitter is in fact contributing to misinformation by labelling U.S. outlet National Public Radio as “government-funded media,” one expert says. “NPR literally said ‘Federal funding is essential to public radio’ on their own website (now taken down). “Guess they won’t mind losing Federal funding in that case ... Defund NPR!”A day earlier, Canadian Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre asked Twitter in a letter to label CBC accounts as “government-funded” media. That is why I’m asking Twitter and Elon Musk to accurately label CBC as ‘government-funded media,’” Poilievre tweeted on Tuesday.
