Some prominent Toronto mayoral candidates, including city council’s current housing and planning chair, are holding campaign events aimed at raising money from developers. Mayoral candidates asking deep-pocketed homebuilders for campaign donations is not new. However, political observers say large-scale events hosted for municipal candidates by developers — common in provincial politics — have until now been a rarity. Brad Bradford, the housing chair, is appearing Monday evening at a dinner hosted by Al Libfeld, co-founder and president of Pickering-based Tribute Communities, which has multiple condominium projects in Toronto. “Our campaign isn’t going out of our way to court donations from developers, nor do we expect developers will go out of their way to support our campaign,” Matlow wrote in a statement.

I’m not about that,” Arnold Pinnock, who co-created the landmark series about Black Canadian railway porters, told a roomful of media after the award presentations. I think that the show, the talent, the importance is undeniable.”“We got to showcase what talented people we have in our Canadian Black community,” Pinnock added. So clearly there is still work to be done to ensure diverse Canadian stories get produced, but at least some of those stories were rewarded during Canadian Screen Week. Imagine being called “the eighth wonder of the world.”At a 1901 dinner honouring Helen Keller (1880-1968), that’s precisely how Mark Twain introduced her to the crowd. And, unfortunately, during her earliest socialist period, she used a lot of stale rhetoric, which doesn’t convince in any era,” Wallace said. Keller gave an interview in which she went on the record about the appalling treatment of Black South Africans. It was like political whack-a-mole trying to maintain her image as a secular saint,” Wallace said. She issued an appeal for funds and condemned the poison of racism and oppression,” Wallace said.

Inuit in northern Quebec are now able to take vision tests using the Inuktitut writing system, after two Montreal doctors developed eye exam charts in syllabics. The charts typically used, known as visual acuity charts, use Latin letters, and the doctors quickly recognized that because of this, some patients, especially those that mainly spoke Inuktitut or seniors, struggled. “Inuit speak good English in Nunavik, but many may not have been taught the individual letters,” El-Hadad said in a phone interview. “We developed the charts and adapted the sizing of the letters to match the sizing parameters of the existing visual acuity chart in Latin,” Bhambra told Eye on the Arctic in an email exchange. “Indigenous patients face several barriers in the healthcare system, and being able to provide more inclusive or patient-centred care for them has been incredibly meaningful.
