Tara Deschamps, The Canadian PressTORONTO - CBC /Radio-Canada said it is “pausing” its use of Twitter, a day after its main account was labelled “government-funded media” by the social media platform. “Consequently, we will be pausing our activity on our corporate Twitter account and all CBC and Radio-Canada news-related accounts.”Mar added in an email to The Canadian Press that Twitter did not consult the public broadcaster before applying the label Sunday and thus, CBC has sent a letter to Twitter asking the company to re-examine the designation. Last week, National Public Radio (NPR) announced it would quit Twitter over the social media company labelling it “state-affiliated media,” a term often associated with outlets controlled by authoritarian regimes. Twitter later changed the label to “government-funded media” and began doling it out to other publishers including the BBC, which had previously been named as an exception to the “state-affiliated media” label. Winseck said Twitter's labelling of CBC 's account is “hugely problematic” because it doesn't capture some of the nuances of CBC 's funding and its editorial independence.

Two Canadian women and three teenage girls are missing somewhere in northeast Syria, after an attempt by the Canadian government to repatriate them earlier this month failed. In an audio recording obtained by the Star, a Global Affairs Canada consular official tells the mother of one of the women that she is “devastated” by their disappearance. That was the fate of three other Canadian women who were successfully repatriated earlier this month and arrested on terrorism peace bonds. But the women in those cases were held in al-Roj camp, while the now-missing Canadian women and girls were in al-Hol, a much more dangerous and inaccessible camp. Instead, they started getting messages from women at al-Hol, saying the five had not been transported to Canadian officials, but had instead been put in a Humvee and taken to a prison by the guards.

Tenants held a rally earlier this month outside the downtown office of the real estate development company Dream Unlimited, which acquired the building in 2021. Padovani points out the building is among a handful that have had the highest number of applications for above-guideline rent increases in Toronto over the past decade. The owners also did not repay tenant over-payments which some tenants made before the rent increase was cut in half, she says. He says the option to apply for an above-guideline increase undermines the point of a rent control system. Victoria Podbielski, the press secretary for Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark, says above-guideline rent increases allow landlords to "make capital-intensive upgrades to their units."

The CBC and Radio Canada have announced they’ll be pausing their activities on Twitter after the company labelled the main CBC account ‘government funded media’ on Sunday night. The break will extend to all the public broadcaster’s news and corporate Twitter accounts, a spokesperson for the company told the Star. The CBC has since sent a letter to Twitter asking the company to reconsider the designation, they continued. “That is why we are pausing our activities on @Twitter”Notably, only the main account @CBC was given the label. "Consequently, we will be pausing our activity on our corporate Twitter account and all CBC and Radio-Canada news-related accounts." Twitter's website defines "government-funded media" as "outlets where the government provides some or all of the outlet's funding and may have varying degrees of government involvement over editorial content." Last week, National Public Radio (NPR) announced it would quit Twitter over the social media company labelling it "state-affiliated media," a term often associated with outlets controlled by authoritarian regimes. Twitter labelled CBC/Radio-Canada “government-funded media” — the same label that prompted National Public Radio in the U.S. to similarly quit Twitter last Wednesday. “Consequently, we will be pausing our activity on our corporate Twitter account and all CBC and Radio-Canada news-related accounts,” the statement said. CBC has sent a letter to Twitter asking the company to re-examine the designation. Opposition Conservative Party of Canada Pierre Poilievre had urged Twitter to label CBC. Twitter later changed the label to “government-funded media,” but to NPR — which relies on the government for a tiny fraction of its funding — it’s still misleading.

Elon Musk has changed CBC’s “government funded” label to read “69% government funded media” after the public broadcaster announced Monday it will be pausing its activities on Twitter. CBC’s break will extend to all the public broadcaster’s news and corporate Twitter accounts, a spokesperson for the company told the Star. The CBC has since sent a letter to Twitter asking the platform to reconsider the designation, they continued. In the minutes following the broadcaster’s announcement, several CBC journalists said they’ll follow suit and take a leave from Twitter. When asked for comment, Twitter responded with a poop emoji — as it has done for all media inquiries since March.

He remembers how his stories about family, pets and monotonous daily adventures captured the audience as McLean travelled from coast to coast for his recordings. The North Shore native said his Port Moody show comes three years to the day after he had to cancel due to the provincial state of emergency from the pandemic. Another musician friend, Craig Northey of the Odds, who grew up in Port Moody and whose father, John, was the mayor, recommended Lawrence swing by. Lawrence will show images of his late friend and pay tribute to his hardy wilderness zest for life; Bernard’s family has also been invited to attend the Port Moody show. Tickets to see Grant Lawrence and Friends at Inlet Theatre (inside Port Moody City Hall, 100 Newport Dr.) at 7:30 p.m. are $35 via eventbrite.ca.
