Chief Special Constable Tracey McRae presented data to the transit commission last week that showed special constables administered naloxone 48 times in 2022, among more than 600 medical calls throughout the year. Last year was the first time OC Transpo reported how many times constables administered naloxone, a drug that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. The unit's calls can come from the public, bus drivers, other transit staff, emergency call boxes or payphones. Ottawa Public Health reported 94 deaths related to an opioid overdose in the first nine months of 2022. Data from OPH also shows there were 846 emergency department visits last year due to opioid overdose.

Through this project, I’ve gotten the chance to be proud of my culture, explore it and share it. Jessica: I think for me, growing up here I never wanted to carry my culture because carrying my culture meant not fitting in. So for me, working on this project and talking about sharing your culture, and seeing the value in carrying your culture was very healing for me. The only other state that’s tried decriminalizing drug possession is neighboring Oregon, where the experiment is off to a rocky start. “The state of Washington is a decade behind in having treatment providers and having adequate bed space and treatment facilities,” Abbarno said. The standstill put lawmakers against a ticking clock to pass a compromise before that temporary law making possession of small amounts of drugs a misdemeanor expires.

Unseasonably hot temperatures continue in much of British Columbia with a heat warning issued for the north coast, including Kitimat and Terrace.
