SEATTLE — Over a brief and occasionally brilliant career, Jake Oettinger has forged a reputation as a goalie at his best after a loss. Jamie Benn, the captain, wouldn’t blame Oettinger, saying he “played well.” DeBoer didn’t hang out his goalie, either. “When the other team is hungry like that in an elimination game,” DeBoer said, “and you’re on the road, you’ve got to at least be the smarter team. Hintz, who took a big hit late in Game 5 and didn’t return to that game, started Saturday but didn’t make much of an impression. Shot count to that point: Kraken, 14-2.

Springer soarsGeorge Springer has been under the weather for almost two weeks. It was only fitting that Springer did that Superman dive in front of the Jays’ original Superman, Kevin Pillar, who was watching from the visitors dugout. Kiermaier doubled in each of his first two at-bats, the second a hustle job on a ground ball to right field. Two innings later, the centre-fielder scored the go-ahead run on another Bichette single, which Kiermaier set up with his legs. The 33-year-old took off for third base, with Springer trailing into second, for his fourth steal of the season.

The Stars lineup is at full-go for a potential close-out Game 6 against the Seattle Kraken. Dallas head coach Pete DeBoer said before the game that Mason Marchment, Ty Dellandrea and Roope Hintz will all either return to or stay in the lineup for Saturday night’s pivotal contest. Hintz took a big hit in the third period of Game 5 and didn’t return, not even for the Stars’ postgame celebration on the ice afterward. He’d scored two goals and added an assist in the Stars’ Game 5 win. Dellandrea missed Game 4 with flu-like symptoms but returned for Game 5 and is apparently full-go for Game 6.

The Maple Leafs will be a different hockey team next season. In sports, the chain of command can be clear. It starts at the top with ownership, moving down through various levels of managers, coaches and finally to the players. But sometimes wrinkles appear and that chain of command gets turned upside down. The bigger question for Leafs management may be whether all of the Core Four should return for an encore.

With the Florida Panthers on-ice celebration still raging in full force, with the crushing end to another Toronto Maple Leafs playoff run having just been slammed on his shoulders, Auston Matthews could easily have sat slumped on the bench or looked skywards for answers. “Maybe I’ll keep the specifics between us, but I think he’s coming together as a leader,” said Woll, when asked about the exchange. No question looms larger for this franchise than the Matthews one. In a sombre Leafs dressing room following an epic series-deciding game Friday night, Matthews said he didn’t know what the immediate future held for the organization. The Leafs were extremely fortunate to win the NHL’s draft lottery in 2016 and have him around these last seven years.

Life science real estate developer BioMed Realty is close to securing the permits necessary to build a 1-million-square-foot research campus called Towne Center View on 33.5 acres of partially developed land in University City. The action tees up approval of a rare mega development, in the works for more than two years, in the heart of San Diego’s research cluster. Towne Center View boasts a nearly unrivaled location for ground-up, life science construction, taking advantage of a large plot of land in the space-constrained University City region that was graded years ago for a previously entitled, smaller project but left undeveloped. The existing buildings will be demolished to accommodate Towne Center View. Towne Center View’s design plays off the environmental landscape with sculptural building forms and transparent facades said to be inspired by the topography of the surrounding canyon.

I’d make this the first principle in forming Canadian policy toward Chinese interference and I offer it for consideration to special rapporteur David Johnston, who’s due to rapport to the government on the topic shortly. This kind of brainless, panicked, overwrought reaction thrived in the Cold War. The Cold War was about demonization: us good, them evil. For those of us on the margins, it helps to see things more calmly as we choose a course. It turns out that Chinese interference was mainly about suppressing dissent at home in China, via threats to family members still there, not installing a pro-Chinese government in Canada.
