OTTAWA—Canada is expelling a Chinese diplomat accused of gathering intelligence on a Conservative MP’s family, in a move likely to exacerbate tensions between the two countries. “I have been clear: we will not tolerate any form of foreign interference in our internal affairs. The statement called the claim of Chinese interference in Canada a “lie” propagated by a “certain politician and media,” and accused Canada of breaking unspecified international laws. “There are members of the Chinese Canadian community who have been warning about interference, been warning about intimidation for decades. All of this occurs with the clock ticking down on a deadline for David Johnston, the special rapporteur on foreign interference, to submit interim recommendations on how the government should best handle the overall issue.

A 50-year-old woman is in stable condition after she was stabbed multiple times Sunday night in what Durham police say was a random attack in Ajax. Police say they found out where the suspect was, searched a residence and arrested a 26-year-old man without incident. He was charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon. "The suspect and victim are not known to one another, and police believe this was an unprovoked attack," the news release said.

"This is a true pilot for recruitment and retention and long-term care and … hopefully we can see these pop up maybe around the province," she said. In September 2021, the province announced it would offer on-site daycare for 10-12 long-term care employees at the Cove. Vatcher said the daycare is still working with the province to get extended hours and weekend care to accommodate the schedules of long-term care employees.

Qualcomm beefed up its automotive processor business on Monday by agreeing to acquire vehicle-to-everything chip outfit Autotalks. Its technology fits into a field that Qualcomm has long championed — crash safety protections. Qualcomm provides Snapdragon connectivity, infotainment, digital dashboard, digital chassis and autonomy technologies to automakers in a low-energy package that is important for electric vehicles. Revenue for Qualcomm’s automotive arm increased 44.5 percent to $1.4 billion during its most recent fiscal year, which ended in September. Hagai Zyss, chief executive of Autotalks, said the acquisition aims to accelerate the adoption of vehicle-to-everything technology.

The man who helped spearhead a campaign to establish Yonge-Dundas Square is now pushing to rename the public space in honour of Gordon Lightfoot. “The one person that has had more to do with this neighbourhood was Gordon Lightfoot,” said Barberian, co-owner of Barberian’s Steak House. The day after Lightfoot died, Barberian sent a letter to the mayor’s office, urging officials to rename the public space Gordon Lightfoot Square. Council will vote on a motion Wednesday to declare Nov. 17 as Gordon Lightfoot Day. “Whatever names are proposed for Yonge-Dundas Square or any city assets have to go through a process of approvals by city council,” he said.

Olivia Chow remains the front-runner in three recent polls as the deadline for new mayoral candidates to sign up approaches. Saunders — who has pitted his right-leaning campaign against left-leaning Chow — is tied in second with Matlow at 11 per cent. Among decided voters Chow also led with 27 per cent, with Matlow and Saunders tied at 16 per cent. A Mainstreet poll of 1,056 Torontonians saw Chow with 22 per cent of the vote, followed by Bailão and Matlow at 11 per cent each. Poway’s General Atomics Aeronautical Systems will receive up to $217.6 million to build four MQ-9B SkyGuardian unmanned aerial vehicles for Taiwan, which will use them to help watch for a possible invasion by China. The money will come from the U.S. Defense Department, which says it will sell the drones to Taiwan to help it maintain its status as a largely self-governing nation. President Joe Biden has said that Taiwan deserves to remain free and vowed to defend it against a Chinese invasion. The drones Taiwan will receive from General Atomics are among the most sophisticated remotely-operated vehicles that the company develops. They also can be configured for electronic warfare, anti-surface warfare and search-and-rescue operations.
