I think often about parents who had to work at factories, hospitals and stores. U.S. researchers last year found that the pandemic parenting burden was heavier on women, who performed, on average, two hours more of supervisory parenting tasks each day than men. Child-care centres and schools remain sensitive to symptoms of illness, a trend that is understandable in theory, but extremely challenging in practice for parents. For some parents, the idea of working from home with children again, even for a day, is unbearable.

Wagner has taken an increasingly visible role in the war in Ukraine as regular Russian troops have suffered heavy attrition and lost control over territory in humiliating setbacks. He has repeatedly complained that the Russian military failed to supply Wagner with sufficient ammunition to capture Bakhmut, the reason he cited Friday for his withdrawal threat. The U.S. estimates Wagner has about 50,000 personnel fighting in Ukraine, including 10,000 contractors and 40,000 of the convicts the company enlisted. Prigozhin himself accuses top-ranking Russian military officers of incompetence. If Prigozhin did pull Wagner’s troops out of Bakhmut, it would have serious implications, according to Michel said.

The East Village site where a LAZ parking lot is now located is being offered up to developers to purchase and redevelop as long as they include a high proportion of affordable housing. Three months after killing longstanding plans for a Ritz-Carlton, the city of San Diego is hoping to entice developers across the country to reimagine the former East Village hotel site, as long as they include a substantial percentage of affordable housing units. A formal notice was sent out Friday inviting housing developers and other interested parties to purchase and redevelop the high-profile block at 7th Avenue and Market Street. She estimates that the solicitation for 7th & Market went to more than 1,200 developers and other interested parties. Some experts have questioned whether the site will attract a high level of interest given the affordable housing requirement.

Red Dress Day was observed in Canada on May 5, in remembrance of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people across the country. The occasion, also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People, is marked by people wearing red. “We pay tribute to our loved ones”Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada marked the day with the launch of the Red Amautiit Project. Indigenous women make up 4 per cent of Canada’s female population, but 16 per cent of all women murdered in Canada between 1980 and 2012 were Indigenous, government data found at the time. This violence is rooted in racism and marginalization of Indigenous people and particularly of Indigenous women.

Dr. Eric LyonsResearchers and staff with U of G’s Guelph Turfgrass Institute (GTI) spoke to several news outlets about why the “No Mow May” campaign is not great for Canadian lawns. Dr. Eric Lyons, the GTI’s director, and communications and outreach coordinator Sara Stricker explained why leaving a lawn to grow long can damage the grass, leading to problems down the line. The pair spoke to CTV Kitchener, several CBC Radio stations including CBC Edmonton, Sudbury.com, CityNews Ottawa and more. Lyons is a professor in the Department of Plant Agriculture, and researches the stress physiology and management of turfgrasses.
