How far must an employer go to accommodate an employee’s religious practices under federal law? Unlike federal law, California law applies the same “undue hardship” standard to accommodating religious practices as it applies to accommodating disabilities. The same undue hardship test, he said, should apply to religious accommodation under federal law as to disability accommodation. The court probably will make an employer’s duty to accommodate its employees’ religious practices under Title VII closer to the facially more demanding duty employers have under California law. Lower courts applying federal law will have to apply any modified test to future cases with unknowable factual variations.

Story continuesExporters are required by law to pay for the CGC’s official quality certification before shipping Canadian grain around the world, outside of the United States. Grain kept moving, in part because the CGC allowed exporters to use private inspectors instead. Proponents of the government inspection system believe it’s responsible for protecting the global reputation of Canadian grain exports. But Milton Dyck, the national president of PSAC’s agriculture union, said trusting the private sector to protect the brand of Canadian grain could backfire. “Where are future grain inspectors going to be drawn from?”Gosselin asked.

It's part of the developer’s plan to build 2,200 condo units on the Quartier des lumières site just west of the Jacques Cartier Bridge and near the city’s downtown core. Meanwhile, developer Groupe Mach says it still plans to develop about 900,000 square feet of office space at Quartier des lumières, despite the current high vacancy rates in the city. Plans are being finalized for what Chiara says is “a huge demolition process.”While it’s unlikely office space will be required in the next couple of years in Montreal given current vacancy rates, “historically we’ve managed to absorb (office) space in Montreal over time,” Chiara says. In addition, Chiara maintains much of the city’s current vacant office space will be taken off the market because it is rundown and undesirable. The recently completed 418,822-square-foot Maison de Radio-Canada, on the eastern edge of Quartier des lumières and just east of CBC/Radio-Canada’s former headquarters, was built by Broccolini.

© Provided by Financial Post Bank and office towers in Toronto's financial district. In a note to clients late Sunday, National Bank Financial analyst Gabriel Dechaine said commercial real estate loans represent the second-largest lending exposure of Canada’s six largest banks, trailing only residential real estate in proportional size, at around 10 per cent of lending portfolios. “Office exposures are particularly worrisome and represent 12 per cent of the average Big-Six CRE (commercial real estate) book.”Rising interest rates have challenged commercial real estate owners and investors while, at the same time, remote work is leaving many office buildings under-utilized and hurting rent prospects. Dechaine noted that impaired commercial real estate loans aren’t yet rising substantially for Canadian banks, save for some exposure in the United States. Other market watchers have expressed less concern about the ability of Canadian banks to weather exposure to commercial real estate.

It was just a few months later when one of the first major Twitter death hoaxes took shape as Gordon Lightfoot was prematurely eulogized. One of the workshops was a tribute to him, and he took his spot behind the stage to watch his songs reinterpreted. My front-page photo would be him on the main stage, guitar in hand. Just as Lightfoot began playing “If You Could Read My Mind” — and I caught my breath — I switched to video. At 7:30 p.m., May 1, 2023, Gordon Lightfoot left this world a better place than he found it.

LONDON — Out in Clapham, a rather small and charming local “Big Lunch” coronation party is being held on Tregarvon Road, hosted by Tom Tugendhat, who just happens to be the Minister of State for Security. Thereby pitching Toronto into a premature mayoral election featuring a plethora of candidates, none particularly seductive, you should forgive the expression. “That is a mischaracterization,” insists Tory, referring to rumours that he’s held conversations about possibly testing the waters. But in London, where he arrived in time to watch the coronation on TV, he’s enjoying the anonymity, even when a reporter catches up with him. Tory actually met Charles at a small dinner party a few years ago and liked him right away.
