It was the same look the Maple Leafs head coach had after his team gifted the Florida Panthers two goals in 47 disastrous seconds. “Disappointing, baffling,” Keefe said to begin one of the shortest press conferences of his career. “(Go) back home, look in the mirror,” Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov added. “We’re just trying to play our identity.”“Not an ideal spot,” Leafs captain John Tavares said of his team’s predicament. Before the 2016 NHL draft, Matthew Tkachuk was asked by an executive where he ranked himself among the top prospects. And after Game 1 of their second-round playoff series Tuesday night, you can be certain the Maple Leafs know, too. The style of play Tkachuk has built for himself started from his first memory of watching his dad come home from a hard-fought NHL game. Keith Tkachuk often talks about getting phone calls after midnight from Matthew while he played junior for the London Knights in the OHL. The Leafs have a Selke finalist and last year’s Hart Trophy winner capable of outplaying Tkachuk.

If I were British, I’d be out waving a NOT MY KING sign this weekend. But in Canada, since the governor general has done the duties of head of state since 1947, the monarchy is virtually invisible, and effectively, already is a president of a parliamentary republic. Truth be known; the Royals themselves couldn’t care less if we remained a monarchy or ditched it and became a republic — as Barbados has done. Which shouldn’t be a surprise; the Royals’ views on republicanism in the realms are known to be sympathetic. Tom Freda is director and co-founder of Citizens for a Canadian Republic.
