OTTAWA, May 23 (Reuters) - Michael Sabia, the top bureaucrat at Canada's federal finance ministry, is set to be appointed head of the power generating utility in the province of Quebec, public broadcaster CBC/Radio-Canada reported on Tuesday, citing unidentified sources. The utility, Hydro-Quebec, has been without a permanent leader since former President and CEO Sophie Brochu stepped down in April, two years ahead of schedule, amid disagreements with the Quebec government over strategy. Sabia, former head of Canada's second-biggest pension fund, took over as deputy minister of the federal finance ministry in December 2020. He is the most senior non-political figure working under Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. Hydro-Quebec communications director Philippe Archambault declined to comment on the grounds that an official announcement had not yet been made.

The people who died were identified as: Eduardo Lopez, 31; Alejandro Jimenez Hernandez, 36; Josue Garcia Garcia, 30; Luis Enrique Gomez Reyes, 30; Javier Suarez, 58; Alejandra Espinoza Carpio, 39; and Juan Carlos Leyva Carrillo, 37. Those with serious injuries have been identified as Maria Flores Martinez, 60; Hector Galindo, 45; and Jose Eduardo Solis Flores, 41. Adan Garcia Garcia, 40, suffered an injury police described as minor. Martinez, Galindo and Solis Flores were still at medical facilities on Monday receiving treatment, police said.

NEW YORK (AP) — About 160 resident physicians went on strike Monday over what they called low pay at New York City’s Elmhurst Hospital Center, a public hospital once known as the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. ”It feels, fundamentally, like Mount Sinai is saying that this community does not matter. The resident physicians and Mount Sinai have been in negotiations for nearly a year. The union says first-year Mount Sinai resident physicians working at Elmhurst are making about $7,000 less annually than their peers working at Mount Sinai’s main campus in Manhattan. Also Monday, the union announced that another 500 resident physicians at Mount Sinai Morningside/West in Manhattan have authorized a strike, also over pay.
