Fatuma Adar is thrilled to be offering a Black Out night for “She’s Not Special,” her upcoming show with music opening next week for a five-night run at the Tarragon Mainspace Theatre. In fact, she’s so excited about the special May 26 performance aimed at Black audiences that she’s recording that night for comedy album posterity. “First of all, these people (who criticized Black Out nights) don’t go to the theatre,” said Adar. And I think Black Out nights help with that. Adar, who jokes that as a Black Muslim woman she’s a “triple threat,” is encouraged by the kind of diversity she’s seeing onstage these days.

Mortgage costs that have risen drastically are contributing to sticky inflation creating a “vicious feedback loop” that will be difficult to break, experts say. In April, as more Canadians renewed their mortgages at higher interest rates, mortgage interest costs shot up 28.5 per cent from a year ago. Without mortgage costs, headline inflation would be 3.6 per cent — much closer to the Bank of Canada’s target of around 2 per cent. “But I wouldn’t confuse this with thinking that higher interest therefore causes inflation … in this specific category, they do for a while. By raising prime rates the Bank has contributed to higher mortgage costs, which in turn, keeps inflation sticky, said mortgage broker Ron Butler.

Canada agrees to multi-year daycare deal with Ontario provinceThe federal government takeover of Canada’s child care sector continues to go poorly. The deleterious effects of the government’s child care program have been widely reported in, among other places, the government-funded media. The total cost, including the portion of people’s tax bill that finances child care, is far higher. And if the quantity of child care available at $10 is effectively zero, then the advertised price tag is a lie. Those include health care, agriculture and the media — notwithstanding some illuminating reports in the government-funded media on the failures of government child care.

That bit of history is just one of the many inconsistencies stemming from our increasingly incomprehensible relationship with the British monarchy. It may be a component of our democratic tradition, but our democracy also involves incremental, progressive evolution away from monarchy. According to the survey, nearly 90 per cent of us who want to sever ties with the monarchy think those complicated constitutional debates are worth having. “Once we cease to think that the monarchy is important, that fact alone will render them unimportant,” said Hutchinson. With nearly three-quarters saying constitutional monarchy isn’t worth preserving, we may be only one major royal scandal away from reopening the Constitution.

Perhaps it is his age — approaching a fit and robust 90 — but I fear his memory may be failing him. He and his Liberal government did not, in fact, bring in same-sex marriage. I have been tossed around the system all morning looking for a physician to renew her prescription, with the final statement being “Take her to Urgent Care.” Do we want to sit at Urgent Care for four or five hours for a simple renewal? Not likely when the name “Urgent Care” signifies why the facility is there. National Post and Financial Post welcome letters to the editor (150 words or fewer).

(Leila Navidi/Star Tribune via AP, File)Minnesota lawmakers have passed a bill that would provide more protection for warehouse workers who have to meet productivity quotas, a move aimed at helping employees at companies like Amazon. The protections were included in a broader omnibus bill passed 34-33 on Tuesday evening by the Minnesota Senate. AdvertisementThe bill prohibits companies from firing or taking any adverse actions against an employee for failing to meet a quota that has not been disclosed to them. The bill mirrors similar laws passed in recent years in New York and California that attempt to regulate how Amazon surveys workers in its vast number of warehouses. While kelp is gaining popularity as a climate-friendly superfood, a new analysis is shining light on the economic opportunity it could present for one of Canada’s smallest provinces. On Wednesday, environmental charity Ecology Action Centre (EAC) released its Roadmap for Nova Scotia Kelp Farming. To put that in perspective, Atlantic Sea Farms — which produces the lion’s share of kelp in Maine, the hub of kelp farming in the United States — harvested one million pounds, which is around 453,000 kilos, of kelp in 2022. After decades of farming in the sea, he said he is amazed at how accessible kelp farming is. Once you put it out, you don't have to do anything.” Kelp harvesting in Nova Scotia.
