The expenses in question date back to January 2017, which encompasses both Mary Simon, who has been Governor General since July 2021, and her predecessor, Julie Payette. The Governor General carries out the duties of head of state on behalf of the sovereign; it’s the oldest continual institution in our country. I’m not here to argue for or against having a Governor General as our head of state. The new Governor General wanted the beadwork to represent traditions of Indigenous Peoples across Canada. There are many things to complain about in this timeline, but the clothing expenses of the Governor General — which came in well under budget — are just low-hanging fruit.

When general manager Kyle Dubas said everything was on the table in his Monday press conference, he put himself on the table with it. Shanahan can’t be sure he will find a better GM, but he has no choice but to try. And Shanahan decided Dubas wasn’t a part of the future. This year, the relationship between Shanahan and Dubas fractured to a point where they could not negotiate quickly and easily. The Dubas era of the Leafs is over after five years, and you can argue that it was too soon or too late or both.

In May 2023, Toronto council voted to allow to allow construction of multiplexes — including triplexes — across city neighbourhoods. In Toronto, multiplexes are defined as low-rise housing containing two to four units within a single building. With a growing population, Toronto is embracing multiplexes as a tool to increase the housing supply in Canada's largest city. "We need a wider variety of housing types to accommodate diverse kinds of households," said Valerie Preston, an urban housing expert at Toronto's York University. Meagher noted such projects can take months to years to finish, suggesting multiplexes won't provide much impact on Toronto's housing supply this year or next.

Gabby Giffords — a former Democratic congresswoman who became a gun safety campaigner after she was shot in the head in 2011 in Tucson, Arizona — gave a short speech to the cheering crowd at the ceremony. Democrat, Republican, independent — we must never stop fight!”AdvertisementMoments later, Walz signed a broad public safety bill that included the two gun measures: a “red flag law” and expanded background checks for gun transfers. The red flag law allows authorities to ask courts for “extreme risk protection orders” to temporarily take guns away from people deemed to be an imminent threat to others or themselves. The gun safety measures by themselves would have been a tough vote for several rural Democrats in the Senate. But putting the measures in the final broader public safety bill may have given them enough political cover to vote yes last week.

School’s over for the year, and they’ve each gone to their respective homes to work before meeting up this summer. Shortly after he arrived, she confessed she was no longer interested in the relationship and dumped him. Cruel girlfriendA Without having insider information on his ex-girlfriend’s motive, it’s easy for everyone in your family to just be angry and hurt on your son’s behalf. I tried to explain he’d make himself sick but I don’t think he took my warnings seriously. I don’t think that reader is OK, and hope she gets help.

Canadian Hydroponic Farm has a Drive-Through for Fresh Vegetables | A converted school in Saskatchewan is being used to grow fresh produce all year long. Vegetables have a short growing season in Saskatchewan, unless the farm is indoors in a controlled climate. A very unique farm in Hudson Bay is growing fresh, pesticide-free, produce all-year-long in a hydroponic farm (the plants are grown in water and not soil) and housed in a converted school building. But that’s not the only thing that makes Let-Us Grow Hydroponics one-of-a-kind. The first year of growing vegetables was a learning curve.

Even so, it’s impossible to treat the Western Conference finals series between the Stars and Golden Knights like any other. “I wanted to hear his philosophy, his style,” Nill said about the interview process with DeBoer last spring. We have never looked back since.”Nill said a few aspects of DeBoer’s philosophy stood out during their interview process. Ontario’s chief coroner has announced an inquest into the 2016 death of Soleiman Faqiri, a mentally ill man in crisis who died after he was beaten, restrained and pepper-sprayed by correctional officers inside an Ontario jail. “It’s a long time coming,” Yusuf Faqiri, Soleiman’s older brother, told the Star on Thursday night. I want his story to be heard.”Since Soleiman died while in custody at the Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay, an inquest is mandatory. In the nearly seven years since Soleiman’s death, the three police investigations — one by the Kawartha Lakes Police Service and two by the Ontario Provincial Police — found no grounds to lay charges. According to the Kawartha Lakes report, Soleiman was later left alone handcuffed in his cell.

It was a preseason game between Minnesota and the Dallas Stars in September 2018, which means it was possible that Dallas would have some unfamiliar players on the ice. Boudreau learned quickly that the blur who just scored on him was Dallas prospect Roope Hintz. Even in 2018, back when Boudreau first learned of him, Hintz was sent down from the Stars to the Texas Stars three times. He’s got speed, he’s got size, great hockey IQ, very competitive, unbelievable shot, too. Despite the success of Hintz this postseason, the Stars believe he’s still not garnering the attention he should.

(AP Photo/Lee Jin-man)Asian shares were mostly higher Friday as hopes grow that the U.S. Congress will reach a deal to avoid defaulting on the nation’s debt. Chinese shares fell on renewed worries set off by signs an extended lockdown over the coronavirus pandemic was hurting sales. Wall Street shares rose after more companies reported better profits than expected, while yields climbed after a Federal Reserve official cautioned the end to its interest-rate hikes may not arrive as soon as Wall Street hoped. But Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan cooled some of those hopes in a prepared speech for the Texas Bankers Association. The two-year yield, which moves more on expectations for the Fed, rose to 4.25% from 4.16%.

Turf researcher Sara Stricker says leaving your lawn to the dandelions might not be the best course of action for helping native pollinators. But not everyone thinks it's the best way to help pollinators. Stricker said the number one weed in Canadian lawns is dandelions, but they are not designed to feed native pollinators. He said dandelions are not that nutritious for pollinators and they prefer native plants and shrubs as a food source. "And at least trying to help pollinators on a section of your lawn is a good idea."
