North African countries have urged Europe at a Trans-Mediterranean Migration Forum in Tripoli to increase aid to help them stem the flow of refugees and migrants. Representatives from 28 African and European countries met in Libyan capital on Wednesday (17 July) to discuss ways to tackle irregular migration. The North African country is a main departure point for refugees and migrants, mostly from sub-Saharan African countries, risking perilous Mediterranean Sea journeys to seek better lives in Europe. Therefore, countries “have a moral responsibility” towards the people “who cross the desert and the sea” hoping to reach Europe, Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah said. Describing the EU financial aid as “insufficient to address the problem,” Tunisian Prime Minister Ahmed Hachani also called on the European Union to increase the funds to his and other countries to help tackle the flow of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa.

A major global operation targeting West African organized crime groups across five continents has successfully concluded, Interpol has announced, which has led to the arrest of 300 people, seizing $3 million and blocking 720 bank accounts. Operation Jackal III, which ran from April to early July in 21 countries on five continents, aimed to fight online financial fraud committed by the West African crime syndicates, the agency said in a statement. “The volume of financial fraud stemming from West Africa is alarming and increasing,” said Isaac Oginni, director of Interpol’s Financial Crime and Anti-Corruption Centre. Black Axe’s tactics include the use of money mules to open bank accounts around the world, and it is currently under investigation in over 40 countries for money laundering activities. The 196-member Interpol that celebrated its centennial last year works to help national police forces communicate with each other and track suspects and criminals in fields like counterterrorism, financial crime, child pornography, cybercrime, and organized crime.

While many African countries benefit from mining’s growth, there remain concerns about communities adjacent to mines facing risks to their groundwater or surface water supply and resources, casting a spotlight on mines’ water stewardship responsibilities. He points to mining companies in countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, where copper and cobalt mining is ramping up to meet the demands of a lower carbon future. Industry benchmarks such as the Copper Mark have become essential for mining companies that understand current trends in customer expectations. They also benefit from taking a strategic view of water stewardship rather than focusing solely on compliance, according to Sathisha Barath, principal hydrogeologist at SRK Consulting. With its wealth of experience in surface water and groundwater solutions, SRK Consulting’s Water and Environmental Technology (WET) team works around Africa helping mines to manage their water supply, dewatering and other related challenges.

“It is outrageous to see the Tunisian authorities trampling on people’s rights in their bid to undermine the political opposition”, said AI Regional Director for North Africa. The Tunisian authorities “must immediately release them unless they are charged with a recognized criminal offence, in line with international standards. “The Tunisian authorities’ disrespect for human rights and their crackdown against opponents must stop. Over the past year, Tunisian authorities escalated their crackdown on dissent, using unfounded charges against high-profile opposition figures and other critics. Human rights in Tunisia continued to deteriorate almost three years after President Kais Saied’s power grab.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea said Friday it has restarted blasting propaganda broadcasts into North Korea to retaliate against the North’s latest round of trash-carrying balloon launches, a resumption of Cold War-style tactics that are raising animosities between the rivals. In 2015, when South Korea restarted loudspeaker broadcasts for the first time in 11 years, North Korea fired artillery rounds across the border, prompting the South to return fire, according to South Korean officials. In response, South Korea suspended a 2018 tension-reduction deal with North Korea, resuming propaganda broadcasts briefly and front-line live-fire military drills at border areas. It wasn’t immediately known whether groups in South Korea have recently scattered leaflets in North Korea. In 2014, North Korea fired at balloons flying toward its territory and South Korea returned fire, though there were no casualties.

The Sahraoui Association for the defense of human rights (ASADEDH) sued Polisario separatist chief Brahim Ghali at Spain’s constitutional court for crimes against humanity. The association told Moroccan media that Ghali is involved in torture and summary executions in the camps of Tindouf, where the Algerian government delegated sovereignty to a ruthless separatist militia that trades in the suffering of thousands of Sahrawis held against their will in abhorrent living conditions. Head of the association Messaoud Ramadan said that filing the case with the constitutional court was justified by the gravity of the acts committed and ordered by Ghali, including war crimes. The case came at a context the Polisario has launched a crackdown on disenchanted youth in the camps, suppressing dissent and preventing a head count of the population in the camps to prevent them from being registered as refugees with the right to return to their homeland in the Sahara, under Moroccan sovereignty.
