Pause in fighting allows delivery of life-saving food assistance in Gaza, but more access is needed, says World Food Programme (WFP)
Since November 24th, WFP has reached 121,161 people in UN shelters and host communities with food, including bread, food parcels, and e-vouchers. WFP’s dispatched 51 metric tons of food supplies, including 14 metric tonnes of ready-to-eat food and 37 metric tons of date bars, via seven trucks departing from Amman to Rafah, Egypt, as part of a joint convoy with UNRWA. Since the start of the crisis, WFP has reached a total of 825,858 people with emergency food and electronic food vouchers across Gaza and the West Bank. In Gaza, WFP has reached 759,082 people. Farmers to benefit from IFAD, ADB initiative to boost dryland farming
The project will also invest in upgrading irrigation infrastructure to ensure reliable water access for farmers, even during periods of water scarcity. Farmers will receive training and extension services on climate-risk management strategies, to help them to make informed decisions and adapt their farming practices to the changing climate. It aims to develop horticulture villages, consolidating small-scale farmers’ efforts, promoting economies of scale, and forming effective farmers’ organizations to produce high-value crops. HDDAP is funded by a loan of €36.93 million from IFAD and of €78.49 million by ADB, for a total project size of €129.04 million. Since 1980, IFAD has supported 21 programmes and projects in Indonesia for an investment of US$709.50 million, directly benefiting more than 3.9 million rural households.

Elevator plummets at a platinum mine in South Africa, killing 11 workers and injuring 75
The Associated PressJOHANNESBURG (AP) - An elevator suddenly dropped around 200 meters (656 feet) while carrying workers to the surface in a platinum mine in South Africa, killing 11 and injuring 75 - 14 of them critically, the mine operator said Tuesday. It happened Monday evening at the end of the workers' shift at a mine in the northern city of Rustenburg. All the injured workers were hospitalized. All 86 workers killed or injured were in the elevator, Implats spokesperson Johan Theron said. The huge elevator has three levels, each with the capacity to hold 35 workers, Implats said.

Burkina Faso: jihadist attack in the north, against the town of Djibo
Aerial images reportedly depict a significant jihadist assault on the northern Burkina Faso town of Djibo. The national armed forces of the west African nation released these images, which were broadcasted on national television, purportedly showing jihadists launching an attack on an army detachment in Djibo, with the army responding to the assault. Security sources indicate that both sides suffered losses. Burkina Faso is currently grappling with a jihadist insurgency that originated from neighboring Mali in 2015, resulting in the death of over 17,000 civilians and soldiers and the displacement of two million people. The west African nation is ruled by a transitional government put in place after a September 2022 coup.

These pressing issues encompass a lack of healthcare infrastructure in rural areas, critical shortages in the healthcare workforce, and glaring inequalities in healthcare access.

Germany and Italy to Develop North Africa Hydrogen Pipeline Project
Germany and Italy are set to collaborate on the construction of a hydrogen pipeline stretching from North Africa to southern Germany. The plan outlines the intention to progress the construction of new gas and hydrogen pipelines connecting Germany and Italy via Austria or Switzerland, with a specific focus on the South-Central Corridor linking southern Germany and Italy to North Africa. This corridor aims to enhance cross-border infrastructure and enable the importation of 10 million tons of hydrogen by 2030, fostering a more extensive European hydrogen network. The initiative builds on an agreement signed in May 2023 between the respective energy ministers of Italy, Germany and Austria to support the establishment of a 3,300 km corridor between Germany and Tunisia for importing green hydrogen from North Africa. Most of the pipelines within the South-Central Corridor will involve repurposing existing midstream infrastructure tailored for hydrogen transportation.

African skills development for nuclear energy management
Thirteen member states were represented at this year’s Nuclear Energy Management school, hosted by the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa). The International Atomic Energy Association’s (IAEA) Nuclear Energy Management (NEM) school is a two-week learning event that provides participants with a broad international perspective as well as IAEA’s specific knowledge on areas relevant to the entire nuclear energy lifecycle. This includes nuclear licensing and regulation, nuclear energy policy, safety culture, nuclear fuel cycle, and nuclear safety, security and safeguards. African nuclear energy management is developingThe NEM school is also an opportunity for participants to network with their African peers. Necsa Group CEO Loyiso Tyabashe said they partnered with Eskom’s Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, the National Nuclear Regulator and iThemba LABS to provide this year’s training.
