The pan-African Startupbootcamp AfriTech accelerator has created a mentor-led angel community and investment syndicate designed to connect startups to mentors providing both operational help and capital. Startupbootcamp AfriTech was launched in 2017 as the first multi corporate-backed pan-African startup accelerator, and in March 2021 launched the Africa Startup Initiative Programme (ASIP) to support the next generation of early-stage African tech startups disrupting a wide range of sectors. It recently accepted 10 startups into its fourth cohort. By leveraging pre-vetted startup deal flow through Startupbootcamp AfriTech’s extensive scouting network and due diligence frameworks, coupled with exclusive access granted by the Startupbootcamp alumni, members of this syndicate can participate in premier deal flow opportunities emerging from Africa. The aim is to do between US$3 million and US$5 million per year in startup deals through this network, and OnAfrica is calling on angels to join on the journey by submitting interest here.

As the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) explains, exporting countries in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA) supplied nearly one-third (29%) of global liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports in 2022, according to data from the International Group of Liquefied Natural Gas Importers (GIIGNL). The share of global LNG exports coming from the region’s exporters—Qatar, Oman, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Algeria, and Egypt—declined from 47% in 2013 to about 30% by 2020 because of growing LNG exports from Australia and the United States. Algeria’s LNG exports have remained stable over the last 10 years, ranging from 1.3 Bcf/d to 1.7 Bcf/d. Most of the MENA region’s LNG exports are shipped to South Asia and East Asia, which received 65% (9.7 Bcf/d) of the region’s LNG exports in 2022. In 2022, exports to Europe averaged 4.5 Bcf/d, 30% of total MENA LNG exports.

But first, here’s our take on today’s top story:Russia: President Vladimir Putin will visit Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates tomorrow before meeting with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in Moscow on Thursday. The visit to the Gulf marks Putin’s first trip beyond Iran, China and the former Soviet states since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. (New York Times)Our Take: It has become a common narrative in the West that the war in Ukraine has turned Putin, and by extension Russia, into a pariah. Putin’s trips to Saudi Arabia and the UAE tomorrow underscore this. In the case of these meetings, Putin is expected to discuss oil production and the Israel-Hamas war, on which Russia’s position is more in line with Saudi Arabia and the UAE, compared to that of the United States.

Ms. Mary Lawlor, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, has called on Algerian authorities to release all human rights militants imprisoned for the exercise of their freedom of expression, opinion and association. “Some human rights defenders I intended to meet, refused or cancelled at the last minute, for fear of reprisals,” she said, affirming that a number of human rights defenders, members of civil society organizations and victims of human rights violations were prevented from reaching her. Ms. Lawlor said that the majority of human rights defenders she met complained about the Algerian authorities’ constant monitoring, harassment, and disruption of their peaceful activities. The UN special rapporteur called on the Algerian regime to stop intimidating and targeting human rights defenders for their work in line with UN Human Rights principles. She denounced the restrictions imposed on freedom of expression saying they violate international human rights law.
