Women and children are among the victims at the Abu Salim and Ain Zara detention centres in the capital, Tripoli. “We continue to be horrified by what we saw in Abu Salim and Ain Zara detention,” said Federica Franco, MSF head of mission for Libya. At detention centres, hundreds of people are reportedly crammed into overcrowded cells such that they are forced to sleep in a sitting position, with sewage spills from overflowing septic tanks and clogged toilets. MSF teams reported being denied access to both detention centres. The appalling situation in Libya’s detention centres is blamed on Europe’s harmful migration policies aimed at preventing people from leaving the North African country forcefully returning them.

Despite global risk factors, LNG exports from the Middle East and North Africa have remained strong in 2023, with exports from both regions making up nearly one-third of global LNG exports this year. Register NowSo far this year, global LNG exports are at 392 million mt, with the Middle East and North Africa exporting around 108 million mt, according to data from S&P Global Commodity Insights. Qatar contributes the most to global LNG exports in the MENA region, accounting for around 70%. The total is down from 93.7 million mt in 2022 over the same period, but up from 91.12 million mt in 2021. Also, if prices remain competitive, this should help to incentivize exports, S&P Global analysts said.

"Elderly people left due to water scarcity. Today, our only request is to have paved roads and water for this village." Heavy rain and floods in East Africa that started in October have killed at least 300 people and displaced millions more. East Africa has an annual rainy season in fall, but this year’s disastrous rainfall is about double what it would have been without human-caused climate change, according to research made public on Thursday. A natural climate cycle called the Indian Ocean Dipole has also contributed to heavier rain than usual, but this phenomenon alone does not account for the extreme amount. Multiple individual rainstorms over the past two months have caused widespread flash flooding and overflowing rivers. “The influence of climate change on rainfall can be quite big,” said Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at Imperial College London and a founder of World Weather Attribution, the group behind these findings, in an interview.
