The specter of drought is still haunting Morocco for the fourth consecutive year amid delayed rainfall and emptying reservoirs. The alarm bell was rang by water minister Nizar Baraka who warned that some cities should prepare for a rationing of water as part of measures to reduce demand. “The country is heading to a fourth year of drought, if it does not rain in the next three months. Dam filling rate dropped across the country to stand at 22.5% of overall capacity, he said. Proactive measures, such as the waterway channeling water to Rabat and Casablanca, have spared the two cities water-cuts, he said.

Without a loan, the country may default on its foreign debt in 2024 or 2025. As the economy has floundered, the state has turned increasingly to foreign debt to prop it up. It describes the scenarios that would result from either obtaining an IMF loan or from failing to secure one, followed by a foreign debt default. Nevertheless, these views seem to short-sell or overlook a number of considerations that suggest foreign debt default could well spin out of control. In this event, as discussed, the risk of default on Tunisia’s debt will increase significantly.

Russia was ready to supply more grain to Tunisia, Moscow's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Thursday during a visit to the North African country grappling with shortages fuelled by drought. "There is interest in increasing deliveries of our grain," said Lavrov, without specifying the conditions or cost. Over the past four years, Tunisia has been plagued by drought, which dealt a major blow to its last grain season. The North African country almost exclusively depends on imports for cereals and is in dire need for durum wheat, soft wheat and barley until spring 2024 at least. Lavrov said after meeting with Tunisian Foreign Minister Nabil Ammar that "we agreed to develop our cooperation in all sectors."

Egyptian B2B e-commerce startup MaxAB and Wasoko, a Kenya-based e-commerce player with operations in Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia, are in talks to merge operations, TechCrunch has exclusively learned from multiple sources. The merger talks come as B2B e-commerce companies in Africa continue to scale back operations due to funding scarcity. Sources say MaxAB and Wasoko were actively exploring mergers with other e-commerce platforms. As of last year, the prospect of a merger between MaxAB and Wasoko, both asset-heavy businesses, seemed unlikely. Yet, despite exiting West Africa, the seven-year-old B2B e-commerce company has expanded its reach to include Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

VIENNA (Reuters) -- A reactor at North Korea's Yongbyon nuclear complex appears for the first time to be using atomic fuel, the U.N. nuclear watchdog said late on Thursday, which would mean the country has a new potential source of plutonium for its nuclear weapons. "The discharge of warm water is indicative the reactor has reached criticality," IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said in a statement, meaning the nuclear chain reaction in the reactor is self-sustaining. "The LWR, like any nuclear reactor, can produce plutonium in its irradiated fuel, which can be separated during reprocessing, so this is a cause for concern," he said, adding that the advancement of North Korea's nuclear program was "deeply regrettable." The light-water reactor had appeared complete for years without it going into operation. Activity at North Korea's nuclear test site at Punggye-ri has led to months of speculation that it is preparing to test another nuclear weapon as it seeks to miniaturize its warheads for use in its ballistic missiles.

In Uganda, over 70% of the population relies on agriculture for their livelihood, yet only 10% of irrigable land is being irrigated. Also, fluctuations in rain patterns and severe droughts add to farmers’ low crop productivity. This led to Aptech Africa identifying the need for smaller solar-powered water pumps. However, most small-scale water pumps are still outside the price range of what an average farmer can afford. A 500W solar water pump and irrigation solution using smart technology to offer PAYGo water-as-a-service to small-scale farmers.
