BERLIN — A new video snapped by a potato farmer appears to confirm that Algeria is the first country to have received the fifth-generation Su-57 stealth fighter jet from Russia. It appears to have originated from the Arabic-language TikTok user doz.kbran, whose public profile also features Algerian soccer clips and cityscapes. The document also indicated an Algerian order for 14 fighter-bombers Su-34. The total price for the Algerian Su-57 order was widely reported in Russian-language aviation media as around $2 billion for 14 aircraft. In November 2025, Russia confirmed that two Su-57 fighters had already been delivered to an unnamed foreign customer, presumably Algeria.

Arab Finance: The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) imposed a regulatory fine of EGP 2.1 billion on Credit Agricole Egypt (CIEB) for failing to meet mandatory financing requirements for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). Under CBE regulations, MSMEs financing must account for 25% of a bank’s total loan and credit facilities portfolios. The penalty followed Credit Agricole Egypt’s non-compliance with this requirement up to May 2025, which triggered an obligation to deposit the financing shortfall as an interest-free amount with the CBE. By the end of 2025, Credit Agricole Egypt had brought its MSMEs financing into line with regulatory thresholds, enabling it to recover EGP 733 million of the deposited amount. In January, the CBE imposed a fine totaling EGP 1.143 billion on HSBC Egypt.

Commission foreign affairs spokesperson Anouar el Anouni told reporters on Monday (9 February) that the bloc had “during its political dialogues and exchanges with the UAE been raising its concerns about reported UAE support for the RSF [Rapid Support Forces] at various levels”. Three years of civil warAfter nearly three years of civil war, Sudan has effectively been partitioned, with the SAF controlling the capital Khartoum and the key port of Port Sudan in the country’s north east. The UAE is the RSF main international ally and has supplied it with cash and weapons in exchange for gold. A commission spokesperson also pointed to a “dramatic escalation of violence” in the civil war in recent weeks. The EU and UAE are currently engaged in negotiations on a trade deal which started last July and, say officials, have advanced rapidly.

Morocco has emerged as the fastest-growing supplier of tomatoes to the German market over the past two decades, multiplying its export volumes nearly fivefold, UN data showed. Moroccan shipments to Germany jumped from 12,710 tons in 2005 to 74,890 tons in 2024, an exceptional 489% increase that outpaces every other major supplier. This rapid expansion has lifted Morocco’s market share to nearly 10%, compared with less than 2% twenty years ago. Despite this remarkable rise, Morocco still trails the Netherlands, long the dominant supplier, which delivered 360,200 tons to Germany in 2024, accounting for 47.93% of total imports. Spain remains the second-largest source, sending 216,180 tons in 2024, or 28.77% of the market.

Since 2005, the GCC has produced nearly 18% of global oil and gas, a share expected to increase as investment continues in low-cost, advantaged resources. As global energy demand increasingly shifts toward Asia, the region’s location and cost competitiveness strengthen its position as a preferred supplier. “The global energy transition will not progress at the same pace across regions, nor will it follow a single pathway,” said Brice Le Gallo, vice-president & regional director for Southern Europe, MEA & LATAM, Energy Systems at DNV. “In the Middle East, oil and gas remain central to economic stability and global energy security. GCC countries are realigning domestic energy systems to reduce oil and gas use domestically and free up volumes for export and low-carbon fuel production.
