EU says ‘concerns’ raised with UAE over its role in Sudan war


Commission foreign affairs spokesperson Anouar el Anouni told reporters on Monday (9 February) that the bloc had “during its political dialogues and exchanges with the UAE been raising its concerns about reported UAE support for the RSF [Rapid Support Forces] at various levels”. Three years of civil warAfter nearly three years of civil war, Sudan has effectively been partitioned, with the SAF controlling the capital Khartoum and the key port of Port Sudan in the country’s north east. The UAE is the RSF main international ally and has supplied it with cash and weapons in exchange for gold. A commission spokesperson also pointed to a “dramatic escalation of violence” in the civil war in recent weeks. The EU and UAE are currently engaged in negotiations on a trade deal which started last July and, say officials, have advanced rapidly.
