Vietnam, Laos enhance security collaboration

Overview of the conference (Photo: VNA)– The 12th security cooperation conference between Vietnam and Laos took place in Vientiane on March 3, under the co-chair of Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Public Security Sen. Lieut. Gen. Luong Tam Quang and his Lao counterpart Sen. Lieut. Gen. Kongthong Phongvichith Kongthong said the conference is an annual forum for the two security forces to strengthen their great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation. The conference, one of the activities in celebration of the Vietnam - Laos, Laos - Vietnam Friendship and Solidarity Year 2022, oriented cooperation for the coming time, thus contributing to stabilising political security and social order and safety, creating favourable conditions to perform each country's tasks of building and defending the Fatherland, and building a peaceful, stable and developing ASEAN Community.For his part, Quang expressed his hope that the two sides will maintain effective and practical coordination, and periodic meetings between their security forces and border localities, and work to prevent hostile forces from taking advantage of one country against the other, as well as undermining the political stability, security and order of each country, and sabotaging the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos.They agreed to maintain the effective implementation of existing cooperation mechanisms between the two security forces, and step up information sharing and coordination in addressing impact of non-traditional security threats that affect ties between the two countries in general and the two Ministries of Public Security in particular.The sides also pledged to closely coordinate at international and regional security cooperation forums, promote collaboration in preventing and fighting international terrorism of ASEAN countries, and ensuring security for major events to be held in Vietnam and Laos in the coming time,On the occasion, the two deputy ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding of the 12th Vietnam - Laos Security Cooperation Conference./.

Tien Giang striving to develop sustainable offshore fishing: official

Illustrative image (Photo: VNA)– Many concerted and drastic measures have been taken by the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang since the beginning of 2021 to promote offshore fishing , prevent illegal seafood exploitation, and sustainably develop the fisheries industry , according to a local official.Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Hoang Nhat Nam said inspection teams have been set up to examine fishing boats’ compliance with rules against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and strictly deal with wrongdoings.Tien Giang has coordinated with ministries, central agencies, and the administrations of the 27 other coastal provinces and cities to share and process information in a timely manner so as to deal with and soon put an end to IUU fishing in foreign waters.Efforts have also been made to boost the dissemination of the Law on Fisheries, anti- IUU fishing regulations, maps of sea storms and maritime boundaries, along with information about maritime traffic safety, aquatic resources conservation and development, and Vietnam’s seas and islands so as to raise fishermen’s awareness of sustainable fisheries, Nam noted.He added local authorities have implemented some policies to encourage and assist offshore fishing and related services in order to boost economic value and safeguard security, order, and sovereignty at sea.So far, Tien Giang has seen the establishment of 44 fishing cooperative groups gathering 405 vessels with 3,544 crewmembers, one fishing cooperative with seven vessels and 68 crewmembers, and three seafood unions with 98 vessels and 745 crewmembers.Nam said the founding of fishing cooperative groups and cooperatives, as well as the development of logistics services boats, has helped improve the catch value and supplies for sea fishing, reduce expenses, raise offshore fishing efficiency, protect the maritime sovereignty, and assist one another in coping with unexpected incidents while working at sea.The province targets over 125,000 tonnes of seafood caught this year to serve the domestic market and export processing. The volume approximated 20,000 tonnes in the first two months of this year./.

(Photo: VNA)German development agency GIZ on February 26 hosted a virtual event called “Innovate for Impact” to attract new business ideas from German alumni who are interested in applying them in Vietnam.Part of the 12-month project “Business Ideas for Development”, the event aimed to connect successful entrepreneurs with German alumni who wish to do business in Vietnam this year.It will be followed by a start-up training course “Business Ideas for Development” ( BID Vietnam 2.0 ). The three most outstanding impact start-up ideas will go through to the next rounds – start-up consultation and start-up acceleration – which will take place in March 2023.BID, a component of the GIZ’s Programme Migration and Diaspora (PMD), provides knowledge and consultation for German alumni to translate their innovative ideas and what they had learnt in their country into reality for sustainable development goals in Vietnam.Pham Ngoc Linh from GIZ said the in the first year, BID supported more than 20 German alumni and provided training for five startups with the most sustainable impact ideas in the fields of agriculture, tourism and environment.Four had received 5,000 EUR (about 5,640 USD) each in funding to establish their business, develop brands and conduct trial production, Linh said./.

Vietnam, Croatia explore economic, tourism cooperation potential

The meeting between Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Thi Bich Thao and State Secretary of the Croatian Ministry of Tourism and Sports Tonči Glavina (Photo: VNA)– Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Thi Bich Thao recently had working sessions with Croatian State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs Frano Matušić and State Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports Tonči Glavina.Talking to State Secretary Frano Matušić, Thao thanked the Croatian Government and people for their COVID-19 vaccine donation to Vietnam.The ambassador proposed the two countries resume all-level mutual visits and enhance cooperation at international forums and organisations so as to capitalise on the advantages created by the EU - Vietnam Free Trade Agreement ( EVFTA ) to increase bilateral trade. She also called on Croatia to support and ratify the EU - Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement ( EVIPA ) early while completing the legal framework for bilateral trade and investment.Both sides shared the view that there remains much room for cooperation between Vietnam and Croatia.The Southeast Asian nation boasts numerous advantages in terms of agricultural and fishery products, apparel, leather - footwear, electronic devices, tourism, and labour supply that can meet the European country’s demand. Meanwhile, the Croatian Government’s support for the EU’s recognition of Vietnam’s “COVID-19 vaccine passport” will facilitate exchange, mutual understanding, and cooperation between their businesses and peoples.For his part, Matušić highly valued the potential for economic and trade partnerships, expressing his hope that his country’s seaports will be a gateway for Vietnamese goods to enter the Central European market.He affirmed that Croatia attaches importance to promoting the traditional friendship with Vietnam, and asked the two foreign ministries to carry out a political consultation soon to discuss measures for increasing people-to-people exchange, especially between young people of the countries.Croatia is set to become a member of the Schengen Area in late 2022 and the Eurozone in early 2023, which will create favourable conditions for the countries’ businesses and people to enhance collaboration, Matušić added.At the meeting with State Secretary Tonči Glavina, Thao said she hopes the two sides will assist each other’s tourism promotion and facilitate exchange and cooperation between their businesses and people.She also suggested stronger cooperation and sharing of experience in tourism, a strong sector of both countries.Glavina voiced his hope that Vietnam will support and take part in activities organised by Croatia when this country serves as a member of the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO)’s Executive Council for 2021 - 2025 and the Chair of the UNWTO Committee on Tourism and Sustainability for 2021 - 2023.He noted Croatia is ready to share its experience in safe and sustainable tourism reopening with Vietnam, adding that it served about 4,000 Vietnamese tourists in 2019 and wishes to welcome more in order to reinforce bilateral friendship and cooperation./.

PM attends Vietnam Business Forum's high-level session

– Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the high-level session of the annual Vietnam Business Forum (VBF) in Hanoi on February 21 under the theme “Restoring the economy & Developing supply chain in the new normal”.Addressing the event, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that after 35 years of implementing its "Doi moi" (renewal) process, Vietnam has obtained historical achievements.He highlighted that in 2021, despite unprecedented challenges and difficulties, Vietnam gained encouraging achievements with the solidarity and unanimity of the people and business community as well as support from international friends and partners.Last year, the country’s import-export revenue surged 22.6 percent year on year to a record of nearly 670 billion USD, bringing Vietnam to the top 20 countries with largest trade scale in the world, he noted, adding that the country enjoyed a 9.2-percent rise in foreign direct investment attraction.Vietnam has become one of the six countries in the world with highest COVID-19 vaccination coverage, he said, adding the country has switched to safe, flexible adaptation to and effective control of the pandemic since October 2021.The Party, State and Government of Vietnam highly values the contributions of the business community and share the difficulties that they are facing, especially amid COVID-19, he stressed.He underlined that with the motto of placing businesses in the centre, the Vietnamese Government will continue to implement three strategic breakthroughs – completing institution, developing human resources, and building synchronised and modern infrastructure system.Vietnam is seeing an opportunity to rise strongly on the foundation of the national synergy, position and prestige after 35 years of Doi moi, he said, stressing that it is the time for the country to challenge the mettle, creativity and adaptation capacity of both the Government and business community in the spirit of mutual support, harmonious benefit and shared risk. An overview of the high-level session of the annual Vietnam Business Forum (Photo: VNA)Along with effectively implementing the socio-economic recovery and development programme in parallel with COVID-19 prevention and control, Vietnam will continue to work to keep macro-economy stable, improving the business and investment environment, speeding up digital transformation, boosting the growth of digital economy, digital society, green economy and circular economy, and mitigating climate changes, he said.The PM stated that Vietnam will roll out measures to recover the supply chains as well as business and production activities, while speeding up administrative reform, and developing different factors serving production such as capital, land, resources and science-technology markets.The Vietnamese Government will also work to create an equal environment for all economic sectors, he underscored, saying that the country encourages private and foreign investments in the fields of high technology, support industries, smart agriculture, environmental protection, renewable energy, infrastructure building and social welfare.Vietnam will make full use of advantages from free trade agreements, including the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) to expand markets and diversify business partnership, while strictly handling smuggling and trade fraud, he said.At the event, PM Chinh asked ministries, sectors and relevant agencies to collect ideas from the business community and respond to their feedback.He expressed his hope that the business community will continue to join hands with the Vietnamese Government and people to effectively implement socio-economic targets for 2022.At the event, representatives from business associations gave ideas on how to improve the domestic production capacity, expand the supporting industry, develop inter-sectoral industrial clusters and value chains, and increase linkages between foreign-invested enterprises and their domestic peers.They highlighted the role of financial resources to the development of industrial clusters and supply chains, as well as the significance of sustainable energy and digital economy. They also gave proposals on what Vietnam should do to help the business community to grow fast and sustainably.Established in 1997, VBF is a regular and high-level channel of communication between the business community and Vietnamese Government./.
