Americans filing for unemployment insurance on an ongoing basis reached the highest level since November 2021 at the end of July. In the week ending July 26, 1.974 million continuing claims were filed, up from 1.936 million the week prior and the highest level seen since November 2021, according to data from the Department of Labor released Thursday morning. Economists see an increase in continuing claims as a sign that those out of work are taking longer to find new jobs. Meanwhile, weekly filings for unemployment benefits increased to 226,000 in the week ending Aug. 2, up from 221,000 the week prior. The July jobs report showed the US economy added 73,000 jobs while the unemployment rate moved higher to 4.2%.

Border Patrol agents clad in tactical gear jumped out of a Penske moving truck in the parking lot of a Los Angeles Home Depot before arresting more than a dozen immigrants early on Wednesday morning. U.S. District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong granted a temporary restraining order later that month, temporarily blocking federal agents from racially profiling people to carry out arrests and detentions. Bovino, the Border Patrol sector chief, credited Fox News with the video footage in an Instagram post — and compared agents to “The Odyssey” characters Odysseus, Achilles and Ajax. A spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security told HuffPost Border Patrol agents arrested 16 “illegal aliens from Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua,” but also did not mention MS-13. U.S. Border Patrol El Centro Sector Chief Greg Bovino compared the Border Patrol agents who participated in Wednesday's raid to characters in "The Odyssey."
