Some in Washington and elsewhere believe there may be a window for a new push to break the political deadlock in Lebanon to try to ease escalating warWASHINGTON -- With Israel’s sabotage and military operations in Lebanon taking out many of Hezbollah’s senior leaders, some in Washington and elsewhere believe there may be a window for a new push to break the political deadlock in Lebanon to try to ease escalating war. “It’s clear that the people of Lebanon have an interest, a strong interest, in the state asserting itself and taking responsibility for the country and its future," Blinken told reporters Friday in Laos. In the meantime, the worsening political paralysis and stalled measures to alleviate a crippling economic crisis have plunged three-quarters of the population into poverty. As he made his way home from Laos, Blinken spoke with Mikati and Berri to reaffirm the importance of stabilizing the political crisis. He is expected to attend an international conference on Lebanon hosted by France later this month, U.S. officials said.

The Dodgers’ Game 5 victory also marked the first MLB postseason series win of Shohei Ohtani’s career. Hernandez was part of the team’s last World Series championship in 2020 when the team won the title in the COVID-shortened season. He was also part of the team’s World Series losses to the Houston Astros in 2017 and the Boston Red Sox in 2018. Hernandez re-signed with the team on a one-year, $4 million contract to return to the team. Now, Hernandez will help lead the team back to the World Series when they take on the New York Mets in the NLCS.

Israel strikes a Lebanese army checkpointOn Friday, the Lebanese army said an Israeli airstrike hit a building near a military checkpoint in the southern Bint Jbeil province. The Israeli military said it had been targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon when reports emerged that it had hit several Lebanese army soldiers. The Israeli army said it investigated the incident but remained “unaware of any Lebanese army facilities found in the area of the strike." The only direct clash between the two national armies occurred on Oct. 3, when Israeli tank fire hit a Lebanese army post also in the area of Bint Jbeil, killing a soldier and prompting Lebanese soldiers to return fire. The Israeli military had no comment on the reports.

Wiles said Trump’s campaign is being hampered in its planning because of threats, and expects to hold far more events in the final weeks of the campaign. The Secret Service is also imposing temporary flight restrictions “over the former president’s residence and when he travels,” he added. The official said the U.S. government was frustrated by the Trump campaign releasing statements that they felt politicized the briefings the campaign was given on Iran. The Secret Service has repeatedly escalated Trump’s security, but not to levels the campaign wants, the people said. The foiled plot prompted national security officials to alert the Secret Service about unspecified Iranian threats to Trump.

Anyone in possession of those numbers must be careful not to jam the Harris-Walz calendar with mainstream media interviews. And then, after “60 Minutes” correspondent Bill Whitaker grilled Harris earlier this week, right-wing media outlets hyped the accountability moments, even as Trump bailed on his “60 Minutes” interview. “‘You Have Changed’: Harris Faces Brutal Grilling On Flip-Flops, Border Crisis In 60 Minutes Interview,” reads the headline of the write-up by the Daily Caller. The American right would do well to acknowledge that the reviled mainstream media has a history of going after anyone who dares mount a presidential campaign. In an appearance with host Alex Cooper on the podcast “Call Her Daddy,” Harris discussed reproductive rights and related issues.
