True Value hardware declares bankruptcy and sells itself to a rival
New York — True Value, a 75-year old hardware store brand, has filed for bankruptcy and is selling substantially all of its operations to a rival, the company announced Monday. See the listTrue Value said its stores will remain open, because they are not part of the bankruptcy proceedings. Bigger rivals like Home Depot and Lowe’s have also been in a yearslong slump since the pandemic boom, but they remain in a significantly stronger financial situation than True Value. Do it Best is a member-owned wholesaler that sells hardware, lumber and other home goods to independent stores. “This acquisition, if consummated, would provide True Value and independent hardware stores the strongest opportunities for growth for years to come.”The transaction with Do it Best is expected to close by the end of the year, unless there’s better offers.

CPD Makes Arrest After Early Morning Traffic Stop
The Columbia Police Department initiated a traffic stop on Jamestown Street early Monday morning, October 14, 2024. After gaining consent to search the vehicle, a passenger was found to be in possession of suspected narcotics and paraphernalia. The subject had additionally given Officers a false name before being taken into custody. Aleya Milby, 38, of Columbia has been charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, trafficking in a controlled substance 3rd degree, giving Officer a false name, and possession of methamphetamine. He was assisted by Officers Holly Necessary and Jay Wilson.

Of 50 economists in a Wall Street Journal survey, 68% said Trump’s policies would mean inflation would likely be higher, while only 12% said that about Vice President Kamala Harris’ proposals. AdvertisementThe survey is taken quarterly and includes economists from Wall Street, business and academia, the Journal said Monday. The outlet noted that 66 economists sent in responses this time, but not all of them answered every question. Both Trump’s and Harris’ plans have been accused of adding to the government’s ongoing budget woes.

Veteran female officer sues LAPD, claims retaliation for reporting hostile workplace
To make it in the LAPD, department veterans say, you need a thick skin. In a whistleblower lawsuit filed this year in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Klotz claims the LAPD retaliated against her. A follow-up letter to the Police Commission names the supervising detective who allegedly made the Figueroa comments, Christopher Marsden. In addition, a dozen or so cases involving complaints by female officers about harassment and discrimination are pending. Klotz says she was informed that she was being returned to her previous detective rank, which restores her pay.
