Oakland's airport name change has been blocked for now. The name “San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport” is off-limits to Oakland’s airport — at least for now. On Tuesday, US Magistrate Judge Thomas S. Hixson blocked the Port of Oakland from using the name it recently adopted for the Bay Area airport that was formerly called Metropolitan Oakland International Airport. The judge granted the City of San Francisco’s motion for a preliminary injunction with respect to the Port of Oakland while the legal battle plays out. The City of San Francisco filed a lawsuit on April 18 following the approval by Oakland’s Board of Port Commissioners to change the airport’s name.

Gallego Makes History With Arizona Senate Win Ruben Gallego defeats Kari Lake, marking pivotal Democratic gains as Arizona continues its political transformationArizona has just marked another significant turn on its political stage, with Democrat Ruben Gallego securing his place as the state's first Latino U.S. senator, defeating Republican Kari Lake by over 72,000 votes. His victory is especially momentous as it prevents the Republican party from extending its majority to 54 seats in the Senate. A considerable number of Arizona voters expressed unfavorable opinions of her, which likely contributed to her defeat. Voters are eager to see how Gallego will navigate his new role as senator, poised to represent diverse interests across Arizona. This Senate race not only highlights the changing tide in Arizona but also raises broader questions about party identity and voter engagement.

Stephen Colbert said Donald Trump’s selection of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) for secretary of state came as a surprise given the history of bad blood between the two. “Back when Rubio was running against Trump in the 2016 primary, he hit Trump below the belt,” Colbert recalled, then rolled footage of Rubio making an implication about the size of Trump’s penis. “You know what they say about men with small hands,” Rubio said at the time. “Even if you spend years insulting Donald Trump, you can get back in his good graces just by praising him,” Colbert pointed out. “Which is why I’d like to take this opportunity to say to our new president-elect...”Colbert turned to a new camera angle and addressed Trump with a single word: “Pass.”The audience roared with approval.

Postal Service, and it required whatever delivery service they did use to check the recipient’s ID. The state of California added its own twist that year, banning most flavored tobacco products. Researchers at UC San Diego, Cal State San Marcos and Stanford decided to test how well those protections were working. If the results in San Diego are any indication, they’re hardly working at all. “These results demonstrated pervasive nonadherence to age verification, shipping, and flavored tobacco restrictions among online tobacco retailers,” the study’s authors wrote.

Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are going to have a really tough time trying to achieve their Donald Trump-given mission of making the government more efficient, says CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin. He also didn’t explain why a department focused on government efficiency requires two leaders. “And it requires a lot of hoops to be jumped through if you want to get rid of part of a government department. If you want to change the structure of the Department of Education, the Department of the Interior. It’s a lot harder than it seems.”The Daily Beast Podcast episodes are released every Thursday.

A human case of bird flu in Canada is a rare event: The only other confirmed human case of bird flu in the country came in 2014. Sources tell Fortune that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) has been in touch with Canadian health authorities, providing clinical consultation. In the U.S. this year, 46 cases of bird flu in humans have been confirmed, nearly all of them farm workers who were exposed to infected poultry or cattle. Rachel Maddow opened her MSNBC show on Monday night with a sobering 26-minute monologue. “The Rachel Maddow Show,” the liberal network’s highest-rated program, drew 1.3 million viewers on Monday, about a million shy of her October average, according to Nielsen. In a crucial ratings metric — viewers under the age of 54 — it was the least-watched edition of the show since April 2022. That performance mirrors much of what has been happening at MSNBC in the week since Mr. Trump’s election win. Los Angeles Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong revealed Vice President Kamala Harris’ stance on the war in Gaza was “one of the reasons” he blocked his paper from endorsing her for president. “Somebody had asked me, ‘Was that the reason?’ I said, ‘Well, that wasn’t the only reason.’ Clearly, that was one of the reasons and there are many other reasons,” Soon-Shiong said. His daughter Nika Soon-Shiong had previously tied the decision back to the war in Gaza as well, though her father denied it at the time. The elder Soon-Shiong’s answer comes after he referred to the war between Israel and Palestine as a “genocide” in an email to an L.A. Times editor on Nov. 3. Before the 2024 presidential election, the L.A. Times was rocked after the editorial board’s plan to endorse Harris was scrapped by Soon-Shiong.

During an interview on “The Shawn Ryan Show” podcast, he said allowing women to serve in combat hurts that effort. Some suggested he could be Pentagon chief in name only as the Trump White House runs the department. Smith said that while Hegseth’s combat experience is a plus, running the Pentagon requires a lot of other skill sets, and his nomination will need some time for consideration.
