The Lord Crewe Arms in Blanchland, Northumberland, right on the County Durham border, has been featured by The Times in its list of the “25 most irresistible autumn escapes”, praised for its fireside comfort, rich history and “atmospheric” setting. The accolade adds to Blanchland’s growing reputation as one of the prettiest villages in northern England. Visit Northumberland describes Blanchland as a “storybook, small village” that “seemingly hasn’t changed since medieval times". The Lord Crewe Arms itself, one of the oldest hostelries in the country, was originally the Abbot’s Lodge and once sheltered Jacobite leader General Tom Foster behind its great fireplace during the 1715 rebellion. Blanchland joins destinations in the Cotswolds, East Sussex and Whitby in The Times’ celebration of the very best seasonal getaways across Britain.

I own The Cottage In The Wood in the Whinlatter Forest near Keswick. When my wife and I were looking to get married, the Lake District was the natural choice for such a monumental event. So, if you have a neighbour with a fig tree, ask for a few leaves and give this a go! Then line the tart shell, leaving 2cm around the edge and return to the fridge so the pastry case can set. In a small pan, add the fig leaves to cream and heat until just before it starts to boil.

Prince Harry has launched another bid to get taxpayers to fund his securityPrince Harry has written to the Home Secretary in an apparent bid to be given taxpayer-funded state security despite losing a legal battle against having his automatic police protection removed. Ravec had previously ruled that because the prince is an infrequent visitor to the UK, his security should be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Prince Harry does still get police protection in the UK, but it is not automatic and he has to give plenty of notice of visits. Prince Harry lost his bid in the courts to secure state securityA government spokesperson told the Times: “The UK government’s protective security system is rigorous and proportionate. The royal was escorted by his own private security for the event, as well as Metropolitan Police officers who carried out a security sweep of the site.

At a time when the British royal family has been convulsed by drama, infighting and a tendency by some royals to over-share, Prince William has remained largely aloof — loath to reveal the kinds of details found in “Spare,” the memoir by his estranged brother, Prince Harry. Yet William, too, has lifted the veil in recent weeks, in his own carefully managed way. The two glimpses of William, 43, have hardly remade the public image of the eldest son of King Charles III. The exercise in image making has taken on more urgency since his father was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in early 2024.
