Britain's antitrust watchdog on Wednesday targeted Google and Apple for their "strategic" roles in mobile ecosystems, opening the door for regulators to impose changes to their business practices to improve competition. The Competition and Markets Authority escalated scrutiny of the two US tech companies by labeling them with "strategic market status." "Following the CMA's decision today, our mobile business in the UK faces a set of new - and, as of yet, uncertain - rules," said Oliver Bethell, senior competition director at Google. "The CMA's next steps will be crucial if the UK's digital markets regime is to meet its promise of being pro-growth and pro-innovation. "Google was already given the "strategic market status" designation earlier this month, when the CMA wielded its new powers for the first time by targeting the company's role in a separate investigation into the online search advertising market. The CMA says being labeled with "strategic market status" doesn't imply any wrongdoing. But it means the watchdog has the power to use targeted measures to open up competition and ensure consumers and businesses are treated fairly. The watchdog has said Apple and Google hold an "effective duopoly," with 90-100% of mobile devices in Britain running on either mobile platform.

“But when we checked, it turned out they had been using a sweetened energy drink sold online as an ‘ORS substitute’. The child’s condition worsened instead of improving.”Gupta added that blood tests in such cases often show dangerously low sodium and high sugar levels. No energy or sports drink can replace true ORS.” “When parents walk into a pharmacy looking for ORS, they trust the product to save their child’s life. Around eight years ago, many children’s conditions worsened due to this ORS, though fortunately, no deaths were directly linked then. The court granted temporary relief, allowing companies to sell their current stock, but stopped the production of new sugary drinks labelled as ORS.

Five survivors back Jess Phillips - saying they will only support the inquiry if she remains in postFive survivors have written to the PM saying they will only continue to work with his grooming gangs inquiry if Jess Phillips remains in post. It follows four survivors last night writing a separate letter to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, calling for the opposite. In that letter, the four survivors - who have all already quit the inquiry's survivors panel - said they would only work with the inquiry if the safeguarding minister resigns. In the letter backing the minister, they wrote: "Jess Phillips MP has remained impartial to the process, only listening to feedback, we want her to remain in position for the duration of the process for consistency. The survivors added that they had asked for the scope to be larger than grooming gangs - conflicting with the demands of the letter by the other group of survivors.

Liz Kendall, technology secretary, confirmed the new AI Growth Lab on 21 October 2025, which will look at how companies and innovators can test new AI products in real-world conditions, with some rules and regulations temporarily relaxed under strict supervision. Known as sandboxes, individual regulations are temporarily switched off or tweaked for a limited period in safe, controlled testing environments. Speaking at the Times Tech Summit, Kendall said: “To deliver national renewal, we need to overhaul the old approaches which have stifled enterprise and held back our innovators. The government has launched a public call for views on its AI Growth Lab proposals, to help consider whether the programme should be run in-house by the government or overseen by regulators.

They were fully pricing in a 25 basis-point cut by February 2026, a month earlier than before the figures were published. "We expect headline inflation to resume its descent, supported by ongoing cooling in labour demand - which may be happening faster than expected - and by the fiscal consolidation likely to be delivered in the Autumn Budget," analysts at BNP Paribas said in a note to clients. "The extent of the downside surprise on Wednesday, and its implications for the path of inflation mean that a November rate cut cannot be written off entirely," they added.Markets are now pricing in a 40% chance of a 25 bp cut by the BoE in November, and 65 bps of cuts by December 2026, compared with about 57 bps before the inflation data.

It’s possible the settlement’s approval could land in front of a key Justice Department official whom Trump has known for years. He also defended Trump in his federal classified documents case and election interference case. For years, Trump has railed against the prior administration and Democrats for “weaponizing” the Justice Department to pursue criminal cases against him for political reasons. The classified documents case against Trump and two co-conspirators, was thrown out by a Trump-appointed judge in Florida last year. There does not appear to be a specific rule about the Justice Department disclosing settlements of administrative complaints.
