Angela Rayner has admitted that immigration has had a “profound impact on society” and said the Government must “acknowledge the real concerns people have” about it. But both she and Sir Keir Starmer have previously spoken more positively about immigration or appeared to deprioritise it compared to other societal issues. The Telegraph has unearthed past statements from Sir Keir and Ms Rayner that show how their public positions have changed over their time in politics. Sir Keir Starmer – winter 1987Sir Keir became a barrister in Middle Temple in 1987. In that year, he wrote an article in the Socialist Lawyer magazine in which he said there was a “racist undercurrent” to immigration law.

A U.S.-based juice company is suing over President Trump’s pledge to impose a steep 50 percent tariff on Brazilian imports starting next month. Johanna Foods Inc., a major importer of orange juice, filed a lawsuit on Friday in the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York, saying that the measure, announced in a July 9 letter from Mr. Trump to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, threatened to upend its business and sharply drive up prices for American consumers. Mr. Trump has used tariffs aggressively to shape trade policy. In justifying the tariff on Brazil, he cited factors including what he called an unfair trade relationship and a “witch hunt” trial against Brazil’s former right-wing president, Jair Bolsonaro, a close ally. Johanna Foods’ complaint argues that such factors do not meet the legal threshold for invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977, which gives the president broad authority to regulate international economic transactions during a declared national emergency.

A British F-35B fighter jet that was stranded at an airport in southern India for more than a month over mechanical issues, becoming a local celebrity in the process, is finally making its way home. British engineers had struggled for weeks to fix the aircraft, which was unable to return to an aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea after a flight in mid-June because of bad weather. It was diverted to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport in the state of Kerala for what proved a lengthy stay. The British High Commission in New Delhi said in a statement that an engineering team deployed to fix the aircraft in early July had managed to repair it, “allowing the aircraft to resume active service.” The advanced jet, worth more than $100 million, was on its way to Darwin, Australia, according to an official at the Kerala airport, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly on the jet.

The Lower Thames Crossing includes 14.3 miles of new road and Britain’s longest road tunnelDIGGING DEEP Jaw-dropping £9BILLION plan for UK’s longest motorway tunnel that will cut journey times in half is unveiled in picsJAW-dropping new images showcasing the plans for the upcoming Lower Thames Crossing have been released. The UK government is planning to build the huge, motorway-style tunnel in a project that would cost some £9 billion. First planned back in 2009, the Lower Thames Crossing would reportedly see 13 million vehicles redirected away from the heavily congested Dartford Crossing. The building of the Lower Thames Crossing would also have a positive impact on motorists; journey times at the Dartford Crossing would likely improve by around 30% and increase to 46% between Kent and Essex. The use of gantries will reduce steel and concrete to help cut carbon, while maintaining strength and durability, helping build a more sustainable Lower Thames Crossing.

Sarah Hunter believes Marlie Packer still has an important role to play in England’s World Cup campaign. Despite her reduced role, former skipper Hunter, who now works as England's defence coach, believes there is a place for her in the squad. “Marlie Packer had a bit of change in role from captaincy, now vice-captain,” Hunter explained. Her work in the defence means she will work closely with Packer, who Hunter believes will fulfil any duty asked of her. “She will do anything she can, she will play the role that she needs to for whatever game that is.

During previous rounds of industrial action in 2023 and 2024, NHS England told trusts to cancel large volumes of non-urgent care so that consultants could step in to cover emergency services. But under the leadership of new NHS England chief executive Sir Jim Mackey, hospitals have now been instructed to cancel non-urgent work only in “exceptional circumstances” – and only with prior approval. The BMA argues this new approach risks spreading non-striking doctors too thinly, with Dr Runswick warning: “Senior doctors are needed to be freed up in order to provide urgency and critical care. “Strikes by doctors do not have to be risky,” she said. However, the BMA says real-terms pay has still fallen by around 20% since 2008, and is pushing for full “pay restoration”.

UK retailers are renewing efforts to persuade Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves to bring back tax-free shopping for tourists , as the government prepares to set out its plan to boost the so-called visitor economy.Making purchases exempt from VAT could result in £3.65 billion ($4.9 billion) of additional spending by visitors from the European Union, the Association of International Retail said in a submission to ministers published Tuesday. That’s on top of about £1.5 billion of spending by non-EU visitors the lobby group said was diverted from the UK when it scrapped tax-free shopping in 2021.The report sent to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport is the latest salvo in a long tussle between retailers and the government. Then Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak used the UK’s exit from the EU as a chance to end a system that let travelers reclaim the 20% VAT sales tax on their purchases.Since then, Conservative and Labour governments — with the exception of the short-lived administration of former Prime Minister Liz Truss — agreed with Sunak’s assessment that the policy cost the Treasury more than it gained. Subsequent analysis by the Office for Budget Responsibility backed that view.Reeves faces a fiscal shortfall heading into this year’s autumn budget, after expensive U-turns on welfare cuts and amid reduced prospects for growth. It also cited figures showing visitor spending in the UK was 92% of 2019 levels last year, compared with 106% in Spain and 110% in France.
