Twenty years later, hearing of the new direct British Airways flights from London to Kuala Lumpur (which launched in March), I did just that. Still cost-conscious, but in a more grown-up way, I was keen to swap £3-a-night huts for cool beach hotels and stylish city stays. So in Kuala Lumpur we threw ourselves straight into discovering the hole-in-the-wall spots that serve curries and claypot bowls of rice, with flavours influenced by the country’s mishmash of cultures. At the top will be the new Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, one of several luxury hotels slated to open in the city, with the Waldorf Astoria soon following. Pangkor Laut Resort embodies tropical escapism ALAMYTerengganu, a four-hour drive north of Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia’s northeast coast, is another good option to combine beach, culture and rainforest.

Oliver Prill, CEO, TideBENGALURU: India has overtaken the UK to become the largest market by customer count for small and medium enterprises-focused (SME) fintech platform Tide, according to global CEO Oliver Prill . “India is close to 7 lakh, the same as in the UK, and is now growing over that,” Prill said during an interview with TOI, adding that the company has seen steady growth since entering the Indian market in 2022.“So the UK is a small market… India is actually bigger in terms of that,” he added. “That's just a good rule of thumb across the world, so let's take India being highly entrepreneurial as 10%,” he said. One such product is the “structured partners” solution, first rolled out in India, which addresses the informal business relationships common among micro and small enterprises.“In the India market, you see a lot of small and micro merchants working with larger entities. “Often it is UK first because it’s more established,” he noted.

Write to letters@thetimes.co.ukSir, William Hague suggests a sensible plan to revive the Conservative Party (“Kemi, here’s my 10-step plan to save the Tories”, May 6). He is right to give the economy centre stage in step five. Governments that back the right industries with financial support, invest in retraining their employees, see IT as a bedrock of the economy, allow for immigration to support said industries and collaborate with the “right minds” are in fact driving many of the other steps listed by Hague. As he says, backing stronger defence and better healthcare cannot be achieved without economic growth. Hence, why do politicians disregard evidence showing that UK productivity from the public sector grew by 0 per cent from 1997 to 2022

Named as a particular focus for risk-based restrictions were Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nigeria – the last only a few years ago named a priority for growth in the UK International Education Strategy. But making the UK less attractive for the world’s most talented young people – and imperilling UK universities in the process – is not the way to go about it. If a sharp reduction in demand from international students is triggered when the White Paper is published next week, it will immediately hit the key September intake to degree courses. ADVERTISEMENTMany in the sector had hoped that the positive rhetoric about international students from the current government and education secretary would result in a relaxing of restrictions.
