Proposals to 'scrap jury trials' apart from serious casesMr Lammy, who is also deputy prime minister, wrote in a memo seen by The Times that there was “no right” to jury trials in the UK. He added that the changes to jury trials would not compromise a suspect’s rights. The Justice Secretary also wants to ask Parliament to end jury trials for defendants who would be jailed for up to five years, according to the BBC. For weeks, we have been told that today’s Budget was a make-or-break moment for the chancellor, the Government and the economy. Higher tax revenues as a result of higher wages offset much of the impact of a downgrade to productivity forecasts to take account of the damage from Brexit and the global financial crisis. But the bulk of those tax rises will come in the form of freezes in personal allowance for three years after 2028. Nonetheless, backdating tax rises to pay for higher welfare today is not without risks. According to Deutsche Bank, 47% of the tax rises will not come until the last year of the current parliament.

The ten freehold moorings at the estate cost from £235,000 for a one-bedroom houseboat with a ten-year mooring. According to Red Paxton, Silverlake’s chief executive, the new super-insulated houseboats can be less draughty than many houses. “Our houseboats avoid this by floating 60cm above the surface, and have thick, high-performance insulation and double glazing.”Not everyone yearns for something so practical.

Alexxa Oliver wasn’t going to let a thief keep her from feeding hundreds of hungry families this Thanksgiving. Members of the nonprofit U.R. The truck contained 475 frozen turkeys and 61 vegan turkeys — a seemingly insurmountable number of birds to replace with Thanksgiving less than a week away. And with some help from generous community members, she said, the foundation was able to replace all the Thanksgiving birds that had been stolen. The foundation is expected to hand out the last of the turkeys on Wednesday, just in time for the holiday.

The pressure on Rachel Reeves that has been “building all year” culminated yesterday in her much-anticipated autumn Budget, said Ailbhe Rea in The New Statesman. From our morning news briefing to a weekly Good News Newsletter, get the best of The Week delivered directly to your inbox. This “timid” Budget risks falling into “the regular trap of indecision: half-measures that please no one”. It was billed as the “smorgasbord” Budget, and it will “certainly” bring Britain closer to “Scandinavian levels of taxation”, said the Financial Times. This may well be Reeves’ “last Budget as chancellor” but “if all else fails, there should be an opening in the OBR’s IT department”.
