Temperatures may rise during red-hot OctoberThe Prayut Chan-o-cha regime could be staring at its own Kodak moment. The protest at the weekend may have been the largest we have seen in years. Its highlight, the installation of the reinvented 1932 Revolution plaque, was both daring and catchy. But in practical terms, the peaceful rally does not qualify as a threat to the government at this point. What is probably most ironic of all is that some of the government ministers are former anti-government protesters themselves.

British-French actor and 'Bond' villain Michael Lonsdale diesLonsdale, who was bilingual, chalked up more than 200 roles over a six-decade careerPARIS - Michael Lonsdale, the British-French actor with a far-ranging film and theatre career but most widely recognised as the villain opposite James Bond in "Moonraker", died on Monday aged 89, his agent told AFP. Lonsdale, who was bilingual, chalked up more than 200 roles over a six-decade career, equally at ease in experimental arthouse productions as in big-budget crowd-pleasers. For the role Lonsdale won his first and only Cesar award -- France's version of the Oscars -- for best supporting actor in 2011. Yet for millions of people he was the sadistic industrialist Hugo Drax in the 1979 Bond film "Moonraker" starring Roger Moore, with a plot to destroy Earth's population with nerve gas while he escaped into space. His breakthrough came when French film director and New Wave innovator Francois Truffaut hired him for "The Bride Wore Black" and "Stolen Kisses," both in 1968.

A month of historyPlanned at Thammasat University's Tha Prachan campus, the anti-government rally under the title, "Sept 19: Return Power To Civilians" was set on the same date as the 2006 coup d'état. It's just another event to add to the list of "Today In Thai History". Born a Virgo, September is a momentous month for me and even more so for world history. It has been 19 years already since the world-changing Sept 11 attacks carried out by 19 terrorists belonging to the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda. As a result, Sept 19, is designated as Patriot Day in the US in remembrance of the loss of almost 3,000 lives.

Last year, the Senate played a crucial role in helping Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha retain the premiership after the March 24 election. Although most political parties have shown their support for rewriting the charter, Gen Prayut has given no public backing to the move. Previously, the premier cited the high cost of charter amendment process, warning that it would require two referendums and up to 10 billion baht from the state coffers. Why are such signals from Gen Prayut so important? Without a clear signal from Gen Prayut, it seems unlikely that the push for charter amendment can succeed.

Peaceful end to protest a win in itselfA large crowd braves the rain to join the anti-dictatorship rally at Sanam Luang on Saturday. Apichit JinakulMuch to the relief of many, the anti-dictatorship protest at Sanam Luang yesterday ended peacefully and quickly. This should serve as a lesson for future protests, as it shows that violence can be avoided if both the protest leaders and police exercise restraint and are determined to avoid a clash. The peaceful end to the protest can be viewed as a win-win situation for both the protesters and the government, although it may seem the protesters failed to achieve anything solid or win any concessions from the government. Several protest leaders are at risk of facing a backlash after this week's protests, but it seems as if they are ready to face the consequences.
