Written warning may replace fines for speeding motorists

The new system would only apply to drivers caught by police officers, not by speed cameras ALAMYSpeeding motorists would be given warnings rather than fines and penalty points under plans being drawn up by Police Scotland. The new system, which advocates say would be more “grown-up”, would apply to drivers breaking 20mph and 30mph limits who are caught by police officers. If the driver was not caught speeding again within the next three months the warning would be wiped out and no further action taken. Those who committed a further speeding offence would automatically receive a fine and points. It is estimated that about 18,000 drivers every year could qualify for a warning under the new system.
