The atmosphere at Cork City Hall on Saturday morning was one of subdued enthusiasm as the counting began. Stacks of votes were wrapped in elastic bands, waiting to be sent to Dublin, as box after box of sweets and sandwiches were dropped on tables to sustain staff. Campaign members from both sides stood quietly over the ballots, holding clipboards close to their chests and nodding as papers were passed slowly from one pile to another. Among the bustling crowd that filtered between the tables, Kathy D’Arcy, chairwoman of the Cork Together for Yes group, stood smiling with her hands clasped over her heart. Her eyes darted around the room as fellow supporters passed and nodded, giving her updates of the various tally counts.
