The International Cricket Council (ICC), the sport’s governing body, has begun an investigation into the allegations, made during an Al Jazeera documentary broadcast last night. The programme alleged that the players, who are not named, were paid by criminals connected to illegal betting operators in India to fix the number of runs scored during specific ten-over passages of the Test match between England and India in Chennai, which England lost. This type of corruption is known in cricket as “spot-fixing” because it is different from match-fixing, in which players seek to manipulate the result.
