The huge storm moving up the country has caused the cancellation of ferries and flights, closed roads, flooded towns and knocked out power. Currently the best connection to the upper half of the North Island was via SH2 and Gisborne. Meanwhile in the South Island, Lewis Pass and the highway south of Kaikoura have reopened.
