Winter storm: What you need to knowCharlotte de L'Isle The Cook Strait ferry's last crossing of the day, before they all got cancelled, was a stomach-churning one. The huge storm moving up the country has caused the cancellation of ferries and flights, closed roads, flooded towns and knocked out power. Currently the best connection to the upper half of the North Island was via SH2 and Gisborne. Meanwhile in the South Island, Lewis Pass and the highway south of Kaikoura have reopened. RNZ A bruising winter storm with powerful winds and heavy rain is thrashing the centre of the country this morning.
