The standard plans offered by 29 insurers were identical in the basic protection and benefit limits, their premiums varied. The highest and lowest premiums in each group, varied by more than two times. For example, in the 25-year-old male group the lowest and highest premiums were respectively HK$1,689 and HK$3,006, a nearly 80 percent variance. And in the 80-year-old female group the variance was even greater, from HK$14,443 to HK$36,166, a discrepancy of more than 1.5 times. Also, some standard plans which provide extra benefits may offer lower premiums than those do not, that is to say, these only cover basic benefits, the council says.
