As long as you understand you’ll never make everyone happy and every system imaginable is flawed, sure, go ahead and tinker with the Stanley Cup playoff format. The current format is producing good finals, worthy champions and only the occasional outlier. So leave the format as it is, and let’s address the real problem. Once again, we’re down to the final two weeks of the season with essentially zero drama in terms of playoff races. But there isn’t, because finishing first isn’t an enormous prize — one extra home game, maybe a somewhat less challenging first-round opponent.
