Why State Tax Rates Don’t Guarantee Good Services


My personal experience varies greatly from the picture painted in Steven Malanga’s “Why Service Is Lousy in High-Tax States” (Feb. 20). When I moved from a low-tax state (Tennessee) to a high-tax state (Illinois), I was delighted by the higher quantity and quality of public services such as parks, libraries and education. In fact, the higher taxes were offset by the availability of an excellent public-school system which saved the cost of paying for an equivalent private-school education for my two children.
