As co-author of Designated Hebrew: the Ron Blomberg Story, I should love the designated hitter. Blomberg became the first designated hitter, on April 6, 1973, batting for the Yankees against the Red Sox in the season opener at Fenway Park. But that doesn’t mean the designated hitter should become universal. While it’s true both leagues should play under the same rules, baseball would be better off dumping the DH rather than expanding it. Ohtani actually served as designated hitter for the Los Angeles Angels between starts last summer but could have played the outfield.
