The Citizens’ Assembly comes at a crucial time for Ireland, as we face into the prospect of an early spring general election. By recommending clear deliverable actions, it can pave the way for a new era for women’s equality with regard to care, economic equality and women in leadership in every sector of society. As the largest national women’s organisation in Ireland, the National Women’s Council will be presenting the views and experiences of women to the Citizens’ Assembly. At the heart of the Citizens’ Assembly discussions, we must remind ourselves that women’s inequality is not a problem without solutions. If the political will is there, the Citizens’ Assembly has the potential to become a game-changer for women and to ensure women are at the centre of political discussions and decisions in 2020 and beyond.
