A few weeks later, we launched the Oxford Covid-19 Government Response Tracker to help find these answers. It has now become the largest repository of global evidence relating to pandemic policies. But as the pandemic progressed, countries — and, in some parts of the world, states and regions — began to vary considerably. Though initially debated, the scientific literature is now clear: Covid-19 restrictions work to break the chain of infection, with timely, sharper restrictions having greater effect than slower, weaker ones. Some evidence also suggests that stronger economic support makes Covid-19 restrictions more effective.
