Watching races as a boy to breeding expensive racehorses

Willy Calder’s love of racing began as a boy picking up discarded betting tickets at the races and checking the results to see if any were worth money. Named Avantage, she won 16 races and $2.1 million before injury forced her retirement earlier this month. One was Pins ‘N’ Needles. Pins ‘N’ Needles, bought for $6500, won six races, while the other horse, Usher, cracked a pelvis as a 2-year-old. Calder’s first taste of owning racehorses was when his late mother, Majorie Calder, bequeathed three horses to him and his brother Ben 28 years ago.
