Shoe company Allbirds, which makes ethically-branded running shoes from New Zealand merino, is the subject of a US class action lawsuit by a woman claiming she was misled by the company’s sustainability claims. The claim cites allegations by animal welfare activist group PETA, including that Allbirds only measures products’ carbon footprint in its lifecycle analysis, when it should also assess the other environmental impacts of wool production, and that it under-counts its carbon footprint by choosing “conservative” estimates. ALL BIRDS All Birds co-founder Tim Brown has seen sales of the company’s wool runners reach millions of feet. Sustainability has been a big focus of the company’s marketing, both before and around its market listing. According to the company, a pair of Allbirds shoes produces on average 10kg of carbon dioxide or its equivalents.
