Waipā considers more Cambridge councillorsMIKE BAIN/STUFF Cambridge's growing population has sparked a debate about council representation (FILE). "While the number of people living in Cambridge has grown, the number of councillors representing them has not," Waipā mayor Jim Mylchreest said. Waipa District Council Judy Bannon, a councillor for Cambridge, wanted more information before she decided if more councillors for Cambridge would be a good thing. Under local government rules, Waipā should technically have more councillors representing Cambridge, in exchange for fewer representing Te Awamutu, proportionate to their populations. Waipa District Council Cambridge councillor Grahame Webber said extra representatives for the growing town and surrounds would make sense.
