Kushagra Vaid from Microsoft spoke about Project Denali, one of the OCP initiatives. Project Denali seeks to create a cloud first SSD standard with a disaggregated architecture that provides choice and flexibility. There has been a longstanding tension between manufacturers of storage devices and storage system makers on where the intelligence controlling various functions of the storage device should sit. For many client and consumer applications it may make sense to have additional intelligence in the storage device. Apparently, some of the storage companies agree or at least want to be a part of any discussions on the best place to keep various pieces of storage device management.
