The new Facebook, the new Twitter, the new Instagram: recently the Vero smartphone app was being hyped as the successor to all those social networks. For a few days there was a rush to download Vero as celebrities and social media influencers announced they were switching to this ad-free alternative. Another thing that's different is that, unlike other social networks, Vero doesn't use an algorithm to sort users' posts. "The peculiarities of Vero are actually all things that Facebook, WhatsApp or Instagram used to have," says social media expert Felix Beilharz. It remains to be seen whether the app will continue to grow or whether it'll go the way of other failed attempts to break the Facebook-Twitter-Instagram stranglehold on social media.
